I just changed the Oil and filter on my 03 600rr track bike. I have a torque wrench and use it to make sure all the screws and bolts are to spec. I hand tighten my oil filter till it is very snug and tight. I noticed the numbers on the side of the K&N oil filter. Is hand tight good enough for oil filters and what are the numbers on the filter that I can use as a guide. I do not know what these settings are. I found a tuturial that states:

"Hand tighten it by turning the oil filter 3/4 - 7/8 of a turn from when the oil filter first makes contact with the engine casing. Most oil filters have some kind of reference marks on them so you can determine how much you have turned the oil filter (circled in yellow below)."

Check your owners manual. The OM for my GSXR states to tighten the filter two complete turns after the gasket first touches the mounting surface. Seems like a lot to me but hey, I'm not the engineer.

I only use my hands to get the oil filter on and off my SV.

Hand tight
It will make itself tighter after it's used
If you tighten it more than that it makes them a bitch to come off
I had to punch a hole in my stock one on my truck after their robot tightened it on originally

I'd be inclined to follow whatever instructions came with the oil filter. The manufacturer presumably knows what works best with its filter gasket.

I hand tighten. Been doing it for years. Have never had a leak and have never had problems taking the filter out.

hand tight but you don't have to gorilla it on.
just as tight as a sturdy girl would hand tighten it is fine.

Hand tight. I also cinch a large hose clamp around it and use a length of safety-wire to secure it (tightening it in a clockwise direction).

Smear of oil on the rubber seal, and hand tight, plus a little tweak to finish it off....always remove by hand, so that should be a guide...

My Honda manual states to torque it to 20 ft. lbs.I just hand tighten it like I've always done and have had no problems.

I also add a little oil to the new filter before installation. That way the engine doesn't waste time filling it on startup.

the manuals says 26 N/M, which can easily gotten to by hand turning it.

Put a coating of new oil on the gasket, put some new oil in the filter and put it on hand tight. Thats the way I've done every oil filter I've changed from my bike & pickup at home to the big semi-trucks at work. Never had a prob.
