How to unzip / cut / trim zip-ties when you are out on the road (and don't have the right tool)

(From left to right, Gerber Center Drive, Leatherman Charge TTi, Leatherman MUT)

I carry the much lighter Gerber Dime in my on the bike tool kits. 67g on my scale. They can cut cable ties and wire. Not entirely certain their pliers are strong enough to pull a bent nail from a tire. Hope so, and maybe I'll find out someday.

My favorite multi tool for work around the home is the CRKT Bivy

214g on my scale. Lighter than the specs I see on Amazon for the 3 you list--but I have no idea if those are real. I'd carry it on the bike if I didn't have a smaller, lighter solution. The knife and pliers are well beyond those on the Dime, and it's probably a better on the bike choice.

Just let them ties dangle and be free!
It's much more ADV that way

What is the big deal here? Everyone knows that is why you carry an electric chain saw and 7 miles of extension cord in your motorcycle's trailer.

For real though, doesn't anyone know why they make teeth?

Stop a bicyclist and ask to borrow the razor they use to shave their legs and nethers or if you wear an aerostich, use your own.

If you ride a cruiser, just tie dingle balls to the zip tie.

If you ride a BMW, just be glad that $37 zip tie was long enough.

If you ride a Ducati, just do what the factory did with the other 5000 zip ties on the bike.

If you ride a UJM, you're not supposed to cut them, they come as an adjustable item.

And if you're a techie, get two rocks and smash them between the rocks just pull them off. Then, having disposed of your balls, ignore the zip tie and using your iPhone, call for help.

this is why I carry a propane torch in my tool kit.... in case I forgot my knife or cutters and need to remove a tie wrap :thumbup
Ya' know, I never seem to ride with good Boy Scouts like yourself. I won't get so cold when stranded on the side of the road with you starting fires. Also nice for the hotdog and marshmallow stops in the middle of nowhere. :thumbup

Kids - a pocket knife is like a foreign speciality utensil to many. "Where's my USB port on this thing, dude?"

I thought this thread was going to be about cutting the tail off properly so u don't end up w/ a knife-edge remaining. I'm slightly disappointed its about removing a zip-tie.

I showed it in the video.
If you don't have flush cutter, the best tool for flush cutting the tail is nail clipper. The regular one works, but the best ones are those "straight edge" cutters.

The small one, I don't remember where (and when) I got that.
The (slightly) bigger one, Seki Edge SS-104, Hida tool in Berkeley carries them.

Watch the video again. You may not notice it, but I showed how to remove (unzip), how to cut off, and how to flush cut (trim the excess) all in that video.

I made it about 20sec into your vid before deciding it wasn't for me. thats partly y I said "thread" in my post, not "video".

I'm still blown away that a video was made on how to cut zip ties.

Do you put the kickstand down and dismount, or do you stay on the bike and fill it up?

I’m actually legit curious as to what the majority is here. My V-Rod has the tank under the seat, so that dictated kickstand for sure. But all my other bikes I just stay on it.
