HuaWei CFO Arrested in Canada Facing Extradition to US

1) PRC leadership has nothing but contempt for Westerners (round eyes)
2) pretty much everybody in the PRC views stealing IP from round eyes simply as a sport - much like duck hunting, where our IP are the ducks.

I really don't think Western leaders have the first clue just how big of a threat PRC really is. :thumbdown

"Round eyes" isn't really a contemptuous term for Westerners anymore. In fact, the round eyes phenotype is the among of the highest standards for beauty in Asian cultures and thousands of both rich and poor Asians get plastic surgery to achieve the coveted round eyes.

To show contempt, the Chinese use epithets like "Gwei-Loh" (Ghost Person), "AhDoAh" (Big Nose), and "Lao Wai" (Old Outsider/Foreigner). The last one is slowly losing its pejorative connotation though because Europeans living and working in China have embraced the word as their own.

You are absolutely right about the PRC Commie Bastards. They have the legacy of the 100 Years of Humiliation forever ingrained into their collective memory and they badly want payback. They will stop at nothing to be #1 and will do anything to achieve it.

No shit. I had a buddy from a local tech company who recently took a few of his guys to China to work with a supplier of a component for their product and he said they kept trying to separate them and get them out of the room with their materials left behind. He said they would take their laptops and briefcases with them into the bathroom, as they didn't trust the Chinese contacts at all.

Go to any trade show and you'll see the chins with their micro eyeglass and or lapel cameras. Lessay like me you're an equipment builder. They'll stop by and place an inconspicuous little 1/4" diameter round dot msticker on your equipment. Then they'll take a couple pictures of your stuff. The dot is a known size and the picture can be scaled to determine measurements of whatever you have. One year later and your exact equipment is on sale from xyz importing biz.

I figured this out years ago and a lot of their espionage is carried out after hours. So to thwart this I had my guys cover all of our stuff at the end of the exhibiting day to stop their prying eyes.

Maybe not just a PRC vs Westerners gwailo thing. Maybe more of a internal, historical, cultural, moral thing even against themselves.

By the way, these words typically not derogatory, not even Big Nose. Also, you are mixing Cantonese and Mandarin. Cantonese is more rare (Hong Kong, Macau)

Yes this is on the money. Saw lots of total apathy towards some really disturbing events in my times there.

The 60 million speakers of Cantonese count as rare for you? Plus, if you visit any American or Canadian Chinatown, you'll hear more Cantonese than Mandarin. The first Chinese migrants to America spoke southern Chinese dialects particularly Toisan which is mutually intelligible with Cantonese.

I did not know that about American or Canadian Chinatowns. :ride

In 1.4 Billion China, yes, less common. Just be aware of your geography.

I’ve worked for South Korean, Russian, and Chinese companies. I will never work for another Chinese managed company ever again. It was THE most racially discriminatory company I have ever worked for. YMMV.

I think what most in the West don't realize is that China is in no way homogeneous - there is no such thing as "The Chinese" in the sense that we would understand a label like "The Brits" or "The French".

China has 54 separate ethnic groups and hundreds of mutually unintelligible dialects split into 8 language groups. This is vastly more diverse than the EU.

Their history is one of vicious internal conflict - one that makes the centuries of European wars look like a cake walk. They have been in conflict with each other for millennia.

Ironically, outsiders have actually been a unifying influence - but not in a good way, well not a good way for the rest of us.

I'm not even starting on the effects of living under an extreme form of Stalinism for 40 years.

The bottom line - avoid buying or using any PRC built connected device - period.

^ So what you are saying is we need to use social media to wedge those divisions as far apart as possible right?

China is playing hardball now...

China sentences Canadian man to death in drug case linked to Huawei row
EIJING - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday expressed "extreme concern" after a Chinese court sentenced a Canadian man to death in a retrial ordered not long after the arrest in Vancouver of a Chinese technology executive.

A death sentence for Canadian Robert Lloyd Schellenberg complicates an ongoing standoff over the arrest of Huawei Technologies' chief financial officer on U.S. charges and the subsequent detention in China of two Canadians on national security charges.

DOJ claimed it was able to get its hands on emails showing that Huawei encouraged staff to steal other companies' IP, giving them an encrypted email to send such pilfered information.

How about the Chinese guy that was arrested last week after stealing a ton of IP from Apple about its autonomous vehicle program and getting caught at the airport trying to make it back to China. :laughing

I'm sure it was just a misunderstanding...

Um, there was a story like that, about a month or more ago. Like the catching at the airport thing.

do qualify your information with significant names and links..
