So finally my laziness to get a spare made, has bit me in the ass. Couldnt find my only key to my 03 Cbr600 this morning and have looked everywhere. Now i guess the next step is to remove the ignition switch, get the key code off the side of it and have a key made at a locksmith.

I guess I am just looking for advice on how to disconnect the IS. Do I HAVE to remove the front cowl and gas tank cover? Any tips or shortcuts?
Recommendations on locksmiths..
anyone know what size torx the ignition switch bolts are? T40?
Thanks for any and all help and comments in advance.

Rico.

I am sure it will be a security torx bolt, not a regular torx, holding the ignition to the upper triple tree.

You're a good man to fess up to your laziness.. This happened to me twice on two different bikes back to back. :laughing I'm pretty fuckin lazy..

Just call a locksmith- a good one should be able to make a key.

You can get the key code from the dealership if you can produce the paper work that shows you own the bike without taking it off. Then take that to the lock smith, and he'll cut you a key rigth there.

i've worked @ several honda dealerships & unless somethings changed in the last few years this is completely incorrect. the only place to get the code is off the switch or the original keys & new key sets don't come with any paperwork or notation of the code thats on the switch. maybe if you can locate the dealership that the bike was 1st sold @ & the dealer denoted the key code stamped on the original OEM key & they still have it on file, but thats a lot of maybes.....

Does this 'key' tie back to the ignitor(ecu) also or is this key local to the switch itsellf?

to my knowledge no honda keys tie to the ecu.......yet.

when i lost my key for a day I found that I had left it in the rear cowl lock under the tail instead of returning it to the ignition.:rolleyes:x:facepalm

I worked at auto dealerships for years, and could do it with the parts counter. So, when I lost my key for my F4I in 2003, I went down to the local Honda dealership, went to the parts counter and asked. She made a phone call, and with my VIN, got the key code. She even had the tool to cut the key at the dealership for me, once the blank showed up. So this wasn't even the last few years. It was 10 years ago. Maybe they don't do it any more?

My new zx10 came with a key code stamped on a metal tab on the spare key ring for future reference.

It's been a few years since I worked at a dealer, first shop was in the 90s. Personally I've never seen it. Cutting a key with the code is no problem for any shop that's a "Curtis key" dealer.

Yup, common practice. What's not common is anyone keeping track of that number once it leaves the dealership.

I would reason to bet that that was the only reason the parts chick knew about it. And DAYUM, she was a hotty. Almost felt like loosing more keys just to look at her butt when she went to go fetch stuff. Wonder if she was a good samich maker?

Car dealers can still look up your key code by VIN and cut you a key. It's just motorcycle dealers that don't seem to be able to.

Or rather lack the knowledge to know how. It always involved a phone call, cars, and the one time I did it with my bike.

They all have a file that says what they were produced with, even the key codes.
