I'm getting old, so I got a Harley

I rode both 2017 and 2018 bikes. And even though I like the look of Dyna, ‘18 Street Bob is what I’ll be getting. Better engine, better suspension, better frame and ride quality.

Is that a fact or opinion?

I fail to see how inboard single shock, single caliper, and new liquid cooled motor is better than my dual brake, dual adj shock, last of the proven 103air cooled, virtually maintenance free bike. I have a 14.5 FXDL.

That how it felt for me. Ride one.

It's not liquid cooled, it's got revised oil cooling and a larger oil cooler. It's also got 2 counterbalancers and a press together bottom end. The new engine is different, not necessarily better, to me.

I hope I have railed enough about my thoughts on the chassis.

Yes, I've ridden more than one of them, and more than just a test ride.

As one of those big cam, ported heads, big compression guys, there's something you're missing. Power delivery of a high strung air cooled HD engine is reminiscent of a big block V8 from the 60's. My Buell reminds me of an equally as hopped up small block. Super high specific output 4cyl cars and turbo 6's are just different. They don't hammer like a stupid Harley does.
Having ridden a few Victory's and Indians, I can see why people like them, but they don't do it for me. We could talk ergos and quality feel, but those are subjective.
The new 8 valve Harley feels like the Indian Engine to me. Both are big inch, slow revving, shallow breathing powerplants. They make torque, but I can make torque with a breaker bar. That won't get me to 100mph. An engine that makes peak power at 3500rpm is totally useful for pulling trailers. That kind of power falls into the "no fun" area for me. Theyind me of a hopped up diesel truck. I get that a 900lb bike needs a truck engine, but I think a threshold has been crossed.
As to the why, well it's what I like. I like my FXR. I like riding it. I also like that I can beat up on liter bikes on the street. I'm not laying claim to lap times, but my lack of self preservation combined with a majority of the talent pool I encounter lets me use my piece of shit 1980's era Harley to leave many sport bikes in the dust on my local favorite roads. Is it trolling? You bet! Is it fun? It NEVER gets old.

Different people have different needs and expectations from bikes. I don’t care about scraping kneepuks or railing like I’m on a race track. I’d like to enjoy the ride in my own way that’s maybe different from what other people may find fits them. That’s why I chose to move from KTM to a cruiser.
Different strokes.

No one rides a stock Harley....
I do. I figure I'm the only one in my state. However, I'm seriously thinking about pulling the clutch out and fixing the darn diaphragm spring with an extra plate clutch. A clutch with two engagement points sucks.

I think the only things I’d change on the Street Rod would be those little stubby pegs it has (I have big feet) and I might look into a Daymaker headlight for it.

I'm pretty sure there is liquid cooled version, the twin cooled whatever.

They sound like a Honda now :thumbdown

I have a Twin Cooled (wet head) 103” Twin Cam. Sounds like a Harley to me. I’ve ridden the 107” M8 and it’s a little smoother. Less of a paint shaker at idle. Seems like it runs out of breath when you tach it out which I’m sure could be easily be dealt with by sticking a new cam in.

As far as the new Twin Cooled M8? It’s only coming in the big full dressers. All the new Softails get the usual air/oil cooled setup.

It comes with LED Daymaker

I don't ride at night so it won't make much difference to me.

Still matters even in daylight since the light is always on. I catch bikes coming up in my mirror easier that are running LED or HID headlights. When I lanesplit on my Electra Glide, tons of cars move over compared to all the other bikes I’ve split with. So I’m very much sold on having lots of bright lighting because I know it gets me seen.

First thing that comes to mind is the guy that mows you over won't see you even if you had a Vegas neon billboard on your bike. Second I don't want anybody to move over for me, it's better if they just stay where they are. Stealth FTW!

Yeah of course there’s always the oblivious chode in the Prius that wouldn’t even notice the Presidential motorcade coming through.

I’m not a big fan of them moving over either. They always go too far and drive in the shoulder kicking up all the rocks and other crap there. Buuuut...at least I know they saw me coming.

I just ordered some longer travel springs and fancy shocks (pro-action - they were willing to do a custom spring-rate tuned to my bike and my weight), I'm gonna start with decent suspension.

I learned more about shocks in the last few days than I ever wanted to.

Gold valves and upgraded shocks were the best thing to EVER happen to my FXR.
