Iran unveils super stealth F-313 fighter!

You are comparing flying into SPACE with making a plane/boat that can "fly" 20 feet off the ground. :rolleyes

Its as valid a comparison as a flying boat was to anything else in the thread.
I was merely responding to what seemed a touch of McCarthyism in a post or two. I wouldn't consider the soviet ability to build flying weapons of war to be a joke. And if you want to put a man in space, they are currently the only country capable of that.

Remember the Russians love their children too.

And I happen to know a few really hot Russian girls so I have a soft spot for that nation.

If Russians loved their children, they's cease to be Russian...

Nice copy of the American x-29.
:laughing

with all due respect to the X-29, the Su-47 Berkut is nothing like it beyond the forward wings, something that was tested back in the 40's (not sure if they ever flew)

the Berkut has some TRULY amazing flight characteristics with the thrust vectoring nozzles and the canards. the use of of composite material makes it just insane.

HOWEVER, as JD said, the russisans can make impressive designs, but only a handful of them. not enough to really pose a significant threat. and they lack the pilots to fly such capable aircraft

This F-313 is nothing more than a stage prop. A terrible one at that. jeezus at least Hollywood had the idea to make at least REAL looking fake jets.

Thats the "FA-47" Talon" from the movie Stealth. a compeltetely fictitious aircraft, but at least it LOOKS plausuble. Design inspiration taken from the "switchblade" concept.

But really I was reffering more to the new Russian PAK-FA Sukhoi T-50
PAK-FA_2.jpg

which is NOT a prop, they do have at least ONE flying prototype and its got some pretty impressive design features.

also the Chinese J-31 (read near direct copy of the Lockheed F-35 JSF)

yea i'd say Iran hasn't got shit for shit and they know it.

Yea but Russia can make shit like this!

(and have it fail spectacularly)

How exactly did the Ekranoplan fail? it made several very successful "flights" around the caspian sea and really pineered a way of thinking.

rough sea's be damned. this thing pretty much changed our concept of water born aircraft. hell GEV's are still being developed as fast moving coastal transports. they're fast, and have ample room to land. there are also currently NO FAA restrictions on GEV's so they can leave port, and just GO.

Seem's like a win to me.

and uh, if the russians had spent more money on this things development, our estimate was they could be a couple thousand troops on US soil in 4 hours (or less). effectively, round the clock with 3 of these, they could launch a very successful ground lfeet QUICKLY and radar would've had a hard time picking them up before it was too late.

"failure" isn't the word I would use.

That would be the Anatov AN-225

And its actually Ukrainian.

The firefox plane was pretty cool to watch. a terrible movie, but an awesome plane. It MIGHT be possible these days with modern avionics. but yes you are correct, hollywood could STILL make a better plane even back then LOL

The citizens of Iran don't actually believe this shit do they?

No, not really according to a Persian friend. 66% of the population is under the age of 30 and want all the same things that American 20 year old kids want in this country.

It's the minority ruling class that is older, conservative and hold all the power that is causing all the misery for the rest of the population.

It's a sad situation. Anyone who is able has sent their kids to study elsewhere. Imagine having to leave your family to live and study in a foreign country for a better chance at life because your political leaders have foobar'd your own country.

I'm just waiting for the OGRE to arrive...

Yeah nice copy, except for the extra engine, extra vertical stablizer, and much larger size. Cuz nobody ever thought of or used forward swept wings before the Americans pioneered it.

forward swept wings want to tear themselves off starting with torsion of the wingtips. In order to be remotely successful at any speed required some ridiculously powerful (for the time) computer hardware.

the German version was, like many prototypes of the day, rather dangerous to its own pilot.

Now for weird dynamics with only dynamic instability to fight instead of that and the tendency to oscillate to destruction, there's this fun little toy:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockwell-MBB_X-31

there are even hobby grade RC aircraft that can emulate it now, without the need for gyros even.

A few years ago I was given a behind the scenes tour of Edwards AFB. The X29 was one of the many special things to have seen.

I think I see a tape deck in there

Quadraphonic Blaupunkt yo!

Enchanter to tour guide: Meh, F-20 with backwards wings. What else ya got here?

Fixed that for you. :p

There was a lot of cool shit out in the open. F-8 with a supercritical wing, a NASA lifting body from the 60's (think 6 million dollar man), NF-104 (rocket power), AFTI F-111, and more. Most can be seen in Google maps.

The few things stored indoors were amazing.

hella jealous. I rolled through Edwards on active duty while PCSing, got to see the shuttle and 747 carrier from afar, but that was about it.
