My son has expressed A LOT of interest in motorcycles. Every time he sees one, he always points it out and gets excited. Whenever I come home from work, he's always waiting in the garage for me and I let him on it to rev the engine and he absolutely loves it. He can't quite ride a bike on two wheels yet, but he's getting there with training wheels. What do you think the earliest age you could start a child on say dirt bikes? I've seen a few floating around on CL for a small 25cc mini dirt bike.

3 is most certainly NOT too young. :thumbup
If he's into it, indulge him! :ride JR50 with training wheels.

CRF50 has a throttle control screw so they can only open it up part way. Tons of training wheels attachments for them also. My cousin Sarah started riding at 3.

Do it, have fun!

This is my daughter at 7:

You can limit almost ALL kids' motos for reduced power.
If it's not a factory option it's a simple matter to limit throttle cable actuation.

I'll post some pics of my best friend's boy riding a 50 at 18 months.

We got our son a TTR-50 for Christmas this year... he's 4.5 years old.
We went with that one over the PW50 since it's a 3 speed (no clutch), electric start, throttle screw speed limiter and he can grow into it...

I'm trying to imagine how expensive buying a full new set of gear every year for a growing kid would get, and it horrifies me.

Bilt makes gear with zippers that add and subtract length from sleeves and pant legs. They fit for about two years.

My son started at 4 with a PW50 and training wheels. Took the wheels off after an hour. Been riding ever since.

My daughter is only a year old and I'm itching to buy a pw50 but I know I have to wait for another year or two but it's hard

This thread warms my heart.

"Motorcycle" was the first out out of my mouth. As a kid, I liked them every time I saw one. Eval Knieval was huge and we all had the toy. What sealed the deal was a holligan passing us in our car in LIvermore in like 1973. He rode a wheelie around the car and over the double yellow on El Camminto I believe.

My dad was a cop and his disapproval was evident. He hated motorcycles. He equated it to hippy biker malcontents. But to me, riding a motorcycle was living life as a stuntman. Wheelies were the most epic thing a person could possibly do! What could be better? Well, leg spreader or one hander, that's what.

Had to fight tooth and nail to get on a bike. It was my mothers second husband who pulled up one day with a little Taco style minibike. Probably 1975ish. Was not disappointed at all and riding anything on two wheels was everything I knew it would be.

Would have been great if it was something I could have shared with my family, but I had to go rogue.

My almost 5 year old is begging for a dirtbike, and one of hte first "words" my almost 2 year old said was cycle...must be genetic...Seriously considering a PW50 this year.

Haven't had time to research the difference between a xr50 or ttr50.

Any coments?

A lot of the PeeWee stuff has an age range... typically 4-7 years old... and dirt gear is at least cheap compared to street gear... (jersey's and gloves are in the teens $, pants maybe $20?). That said... boots are the killer :(

Also, we started our son on a Strider/Balance bike when he was 2, got him a bicycle when he was 3, and it's been off the training wheels for a month or so before we gave him the dirt bike, we're keeping the training wheels on it for a bit though (he's short).

Brand preference, really. XR's are the fiddy of choice for grown-ups acting like kids, in case you want to ride along with them. :laughing

Here's a picture of him with a semi barf salute :twofinger

He absolutely LOVES motorcycles. I'm seriously considering jumping the gun on a PW50 like.. on my lunch break :laughing

There's a dealer right down the street from my work called PCP motorsports and they have a nice PW50 going for like $1200 or so.
