Is it a faux pas to wave at a motorcycle officer in passing?

I gave one the peace sign the other day, but I don't think he noticed.

Not at all. Wave to them often. Wave to park rangers in the hills too. Only cagers that wave back.

I wave at everyone on two wheels. Even scooters. :wave

I wave at them and they often wave back. Especially SFPD. :)

I tap my head

I wave to the local ranchers when out in the country so they all don’t think we are asshats. And you never know if you or another rider will need their help some day. It could be you!

Bicycles too?

I often ride a mountain bike around Pleasanton and Dublin and try to wave to everybody on the bike paths - pedestrians and bicyclists. The more serious looking the bicyclist, the lower the chance that I'll even get a nod back. I don't quite understand the mindset there.

I'll generally wave to motorcycle cops if traffic isn't heavy, and I'll wave to the guys running radar units too, in the rare cases I see one of those. Sometimes they'll give me the slow down signal, even when I've been at the speed limit the whole time. Haven't figured that one out either.

I wave at all LEO's on bikes. Only about 1/3 acknowledge it. I realize that someday they may be the one giving me the ticket....but there is also a chance that they make be the first responder too.

I gave the head tap to one once before I realized it was a LEO.

He gave me this :thumbup

I always try to wave back but sometimes I’m looking for someone, or something, or listening to dispatch and don’t see a fellow motorist wave. So don’t take it personal , but most of us are fellow motorcycle enthusiasts.

I saw a motor coming the other way today as I railed around a corner. I waved. He gestured “slow down.”

On real backroads, yeah, I often give cyclists a wave. In the city, no. My hands would never be on the bars. :laughing

It's an easy way of saying "hey, I see you".

I tap my head when I'm on a traffic stop and I see bikers ride by. It's wonderfully confusing. They'll often do a slow, confused wave or one of those dog-style head tilts where they don't understand. :laughing

When I’m out riding I wave at cops going opposite direction(bikes and cars), fire engines, EMTs. Just acknowledging their presence on the road and appreciation of their work.
