So I need to get a jacket. Being the newb that I am, I would feel better protected wearing one.
I want a leather one, preferably black with pads in the right places.

Any suggestions?
I was looking at the Alpinestar line.....anyone have any input on them???

Thanks
Stan

www.newenough.com - Find one that looks cool and is in your price range.

I have this jacket in silver. Fits great, and because it's hybrid I get lots of miles per gallon (really, the half-leather / half-textile thing is good for warm weather, which you have some of in Sacramento).

It's not a super warm jacket, I can fit a sweatshirt under it if I need to, but I find it (at least so far) perfect for the moderate temps of San Francisco.

i have and alpine stars and an icon. both are great, the icon runs a bit small for an xl but both have been threw rain and sun and work great. the icon did come with a better winter liner.

check out the alpinestars stage jacket. full perforation ... and brand new, it goes for about 200-250 (last time i checked)

You should wear a jacket even if you're an experienced rider with 100,000 miles under his belt.

Not if you ride a cruiser 'cause jackets don't look as cool as wife beaters, and not if you ride a sport bike because you can just outrun danger.

Johnson's Leather with T-Pro armour.

Great suggestion. You just can't beat a Johnson.

Seriously, I wish I could go back in time and not have bought all the other moto jackets I've gotten over the years and just get one of these super-high quality jackets.

Everything else I've bought has had to be brought in to Johnson leather to be repaired.

First off wearing a leather jacket in Sac. is tough, really tough. If you've never worn leather on a hot summer day in the valley it's a special kind of hell! For every day use textile is better. FWIW what size are you and what price range did you have in mind?

I know its stupid and whatnot.....but I wont be wearing the jacket during the day...only at night.

Im 6'2" 195lbs.
Wide shoulders. I believe a s.56.
Price range would be 350 and lower.

Bummer if you were more my size (42) I would have let you try my Vanson on to see how miserable you would be. Obiviously try www.newenough.com and www.motorcycleleatherexchange. Under 350 might be tricky for A*s. Try Shift, Cortech, Joe Rocket, or even Icon. Some of their stuff is more price friendly. However, and I mean this in the best possible way, you're gonna have a pretty stupid look on your face 15 min. after you put a leather jacket on in Sac in summer. Oh, and drink lots of fluids cause they'll make you dizzy with heat stroke. Leather traps heat in. It's kind of like wrapping a potato in foil so it cooks faster, except you're the potato. The Delta breeze doesn't help that much. I have a really nice Vanson and I only wear it a handful of times in the fall or the spring. Consider getting a perforated jacket at the very least but remember you won't be able to use it during winter. Sorry to be such a downer but I've done it for years and the heat combined with leather in Sac is brutal.
