Jackie the Eagle RIP

This news greatly upset my Wife. She loved following the story.

:rip Jackie

:rose to all the Jackie fans.

Yea, this was a real shame.

We've been following her and Shadow for years. Her nest has been on our TV pretty much all day long for the past couple of years.

But its clear she's been sick for some time. A couple of weeks ago, she was fighting Shadow for food, which she doesn't normally do. It wasn't long after that she was sighted floundering in the lake, after the attack from the young adults. That's when she was captured and taken to Ojai.

15 years old, but still young for a wild eagle, so I'm told.

The dynamic in Big Bear has certainly changed, going to be an interesting new year.

Also, FOBBV, the organization that runs the camera, was trying to raise $10M to buy a piece i=of undeveloped land near the eagle next, some of the last undeveloped Lake shoreline.

They had a deadline of the end of July, and they managed to raise $5M of it, but at the end, they got the other $5M from single large donor.

The interesting thing about this is of that original $5M, they go over 25,000 donations.

So, the antics of Jackie and Shadow have gone far and wide, and they've certainly been good ambassadors for eagle habitat everywhere.

I was wanting to post about Jackie. Thank you for doing so.

She brought in a lot of interest in environmental issues and prompted an awareness that otherwise may have gone dormant.

RIP Jackie
… fly and be free

We had been following her progress as well and were saddened to hear she passed. Ojai Raptor Center managed our expectations well and let us down easily. RIP Jackie. We feel for Shadow as well.

Thank you for posting this. It was a few weeks ago that pure jubilation and thanks to the heavens brought the feeling of success after the accidental fledge. Days of anxiety watching and waiting for something to happen. Then a glorious morning when the first thing I did was to turn on the live cam and see the whole family together in the nest. It was a great day for me. The next day or the following day I think Jackie was found in the water after the skirmish. Incredibly sad watching shadow call out for his mate, and the kids just not knowing. It was all a very stressful time for me personally. I love all birds and just don't enjoy the anguish of their suffering, mother nature is tough. I'm glad Shadow has a new buddy as of late. Closure is good.

Our kiddo was really bummed about this...animals just seem to capture our hearts and it hurts to lose them.

We followed the last two hatches. Sad to see Jackie pass, but the friends of Big Bear Valley have always showed nature. Looks like there will be a new eagle in the nest next year.

RIP Jackie

I watched her send 5 young eagles out into the world, and I am gutted. For me personally, Jackie and her family provided a lot of good uplifting moments during some very lean years when good news was hard to come by. Grounding moments. It's the only reason I can think of for feeling so bereft over the death a wild animal. She was a great ambassador for wildlife and conservation, and her contributions will reverberate for decades to come. I'm glad Shadow has some company, and I'm looking forward to this year's nesting season.
