Just scored my "Dream" bike

I expect that one will go for $10 - $12K. It belongs to David Silver, the UK guy who sells new old stock Honda parts. Check out his vintage Honda collection here.

That is actually a bit lower than I was guessing ($15k or so). This guy has quite a collection, very comprehensive early Honda representation. He has an early 1969 sand cast Honda CB750 (#750 out of 7500). My CB750 was #1202, one of the first ones in Santa Clara Valley.

I think it was on the next lap when we were a bit farther apart. I didn't even know these pictures were being taken, they were by a non-racing AFM member shooting these as his hobby. He had his own dark room and at the next AFM meeting he gave me a bunch of B&W 8x10 photos of my race. I was very appreciative.

Funny thing happened. The race winner was Tom Cleghorn who had been 50cc champ for a couple of years. When he found out I had a CR110, he invited me over to his house so we could look my bike over and make sure everything was in order.

His Mom totally supported his racing career and when I rolled to a stop after taking 2nd she came over and the first thing she said was "no more racing secrets for you young man! Oh, and congratulations!

Another Dream 50 crossed my path

A while back a guy contacted me asking if he could come see my Dream 50 and if he knew where he could buy one. I told him they are very rare and not to hold out much hope (thinking, "yeah, you'll never find one buddy.") But sure enough I heard of one being readied for sale in SoCal, and sent the guy the contact info. Long story short the guy, now my very good friend, managed to buy the bike, hauled it back up from San Diego in the back of his Tesla and delivered it to my shop for restoration.

The bike was semi complete but needed lots of cosmetic work, a fair amount of mechanical work, painting, replating of hardware and sourcing of missing original bits and pieces. Over the last two months it all came together with new stainless steel spokes, polished and clear coated aluminum bits, and installation of an aftermarket overbore kit to boost displacement from 49cc to 89cc.

Finally the work was complete and I was seeing double in my shop. The friend's bike has an aftermarket 2 into1 exhaust while mine has the stock double exhaust.

The payoff was taking a twisty road ride together before my friend loaded his bike up and hauled it home.

After the many hours of painstaking restoration, I stared at it heading out the driveway like a parent sending his kid off the the first day of school.

Yep, 12 mm exhaust valves and 14 mm intakes.

Wow! Beautiful work on that restore. Your new friend is lucky to have found you. That's really cool to see two of those things side-by-side like that.

Dumb question: What does the aftermarket big bore kit do to the resale value? Isn't it preferred to keep stuff like that stock?

Thanks Jeff. Watching auction prices for rare bikes it seems those with zero miles, totally unmolested or still in the crate do command the top dollar. But both my and my friend's Dream 50s were already used and we both bought them as investments in a fun riding experience rather than for market value appreciation. And the 89cc kit makes the bike way more useable on public roads. Funny story, a while back I rode the Dream to a local hardware store and when I came out three people were standing around smiling and admiring it. Then, leaving town I was buzzing along a local lake shore and passed a herd of Harleys parked on a turnout. They all started giving me high five's and clapping! That's the kind of dividend this bike really pays. It just seems to people smile!
