ROAD RACING - Kato Succumbs to Suzuka Injuries

Godspeed Dai-Chan 4/19/2003

Daijiro Kato, the Japanese former 250cc World Champion, died early this morning from the injuries suffered in the season-opening Japanese Grand Prix. He was 27.

The Telefonica MoviStar Honda rider crashed in turn 130R, the entrance to the final chicane, on the third lap of the MotoGP race, suffering massive injuries to his head, neck, and chest.

Kato had to be resuscitated on the spot, then was flown by helicopter to Yokkaichi Central Hospital where he’d been in a coma and on a respirator, and battling to survive in the intensive care unit since the accident, two weeks ago today.

According to the www.motograndprix.com, the official website of the MotoGP World Championships, he died at 00:42 Sunday morning, local time. He leaves behind a wife and two children, the second of which was born just prior to the Japanese GP.

We are very sad to hear of this news. He was one of our heros in the GP world. Deb even painted her bike to replicate his former 250GP bike. We wish him well on his new journey and all the best wishes to his family for their lose. Just like us we will remember number 74 has a true talent and family man. Katoh will live on in spirit with this community and other places too.

It's very sad, but under the circumstances, it seems like death is the best thing that could happen. If he had survived, the remainder of his existence -- I don't think one could properly call it a life -- would be bleak.

RIP Kato :rose

It is truly sad... I hope his family finds comfort in that he was doing what he loved.
