Regarding the batch testing issue, I was under the impression that if there was a failure the manufacturer would be able to resubmit samples to a third party testing agency and the ringers would come into play there. I could be completely incorrect about that and it would be some what questionable as to what would happen to the inventory in "holding" during testing. It would be possible for a manfuacturer slip those through to the marketplace. By no means am I accusing anybody of practicing such acts, but merely pointing out I was under the impression it is possible.

As mentioned before it is about the integrity and control procedures of manufacturers to help promote the production of a consistent product that can meet a minimum quality, performance, and saftey standard (whatever that may be).

There is some intrinsic mental hurdle I cannot clear regarding lower 2nd energy impacts. I have yet to see a trace of a helmet net a higher G reading that was designed for a higher impact energy that is tested at a lower energy than a helmet that was designed for a lower 2nd impact energy. That is, I have yet to see helmet A designed for a 110j 2nd drop have a significantly higher G reading than a helmet helmet B designed for a 70j when both helmets are tested at 70j. Maybe I haven't hit enough helmets.

Regarding the RST protocol to hit to a lower performance standard, it is only to confirm there is an issue with the helmet in question. As with any manufactured good, there is a tolerance in which every helmet will perform. Before crying wolf, they want to be absolutely sure tehre is something wrong with the helmet. If you're riding the hairy edge to pass a standard, it is no suprise that not every helmet you build will absolutely pass--your manfuacturing tolerance will not allow for this, depending on how hard your helmet is pushing the limit. This is no different than what TP-218-04a does for DOT. If there is another failure at the lower performance levels there IS something WRONG and some corrective action is pretty much mandatory.

As far as helmets that are 5 years old, as long as there have been no changes to the shell or liner, the should perform just as well as the first helmet that rolled off the assembly line from day 1. I would be hard pressed to find a difference between testing a helmet made 5 years ago straight off the line where the shell is made of the same fabric and resin and method, and the liner is made of the same material to the same specification that is found in a helmet made yesterday. What has changed? Take it to the umpteenth degree, take a helmet off the line, put it in STP conditions without exposure to light for 5 years in a N2 environment, then take the same hlemet off the line and hit both: if both were constructed using identical methods and materials, I would be very hard pressed to find a difference in performance.

As far as comparing standards, there is much running around in circles and the bottom line basically boils down to: it being up to the manufacturer to decide upon their own sampling procedure they are comfortable with (be it MIL Spec or QS9000 or what not) to ensure each lot of helmets leaving the factory can meet their minimum performance requirements. When DOT or a RST catches a failure, there is a definite issue at hand. BSI tries to prevent that by proactively implementing batch testing before manufacturers can release product into the field.

In terms of helmet peformance, you can't beat the laws of physics. Standards can be written and debated until the cows come home. When it comes to buying one as a consumer, it's mostly an issue of making sure hte helmet fits properly and at the very least meets some saftey standard that they are comfortable with or required by law, be it DOT, BSI or EN 22/05.... The rest of it, how much they spend is jsut a net result of how much personal utility they will recieve after making their purchase.

Well, the problem is, that you have yet to come up with any solid evidence to support your claims of greatness. Lots of spouting, like I said, but no substance in your answers.

My questions weren't answered through your press release links that I have read previously and again. You haven't responded to the question of the misused Snell quote by Ed Becker, nor have you shown any data or references to impact energy levels when touting the BSI method. You also haven't stated why the shell construction is meaningful other than to pass the lower impact energy standard.

Rick, the above paragraphs are all words and no data. This kind of thing doesn't make me want to buy a Suomy, to be honest. You are fighting a lot of industry momentum with the Japanese brands, and my opinion is that if you can back up your claims with data, you'd sell at least one more helmet (to me).
 
That's the thing, I could appreciate what Suomy is doing, if the real importance or differences were being shown as meaningful to me as a customer.

Not yet have I seen any data that shows a Snell spec helmet will fail the BSI tests or perform unfavorably at those impact levels. That's the least of which I would expect to see alongside those statements about second-drop tests.

Hey, I have a KBC TK-8. Your comment about comfortable is interesting because both Shoei and Arai were very uncomfortable for me compared to the KBC. I think everyone has a different head and each helmet fits differently (even one Shoei to another fits differently as far as I can tell).

I agree that one should get a good helmet. I find your earlier comment (I think it was you) that KBC's are not as safe as the others is interesting. I have always wanted to see data on comparative tests showing how well one helmet held up to another on crash tests. I have never seen such a comparison. Without such tests, how do any of us know that a Shoei or Arai or KBC is "more safe" than another? As for recalls, I will bet that Arai and Shoei have had more than one recall in their past. So what! I don't think that a recall of one particular helmet made in a specific time period is truly indicative of whether or not that manufacturer's entire line of helmets is "safe." Shit, what am I, a spokesperson for KBC? :wow

Anyway, I would be interested in anyone that has info on any comparative tests between helmets.:nerd And, yes, I am looking into the tests mentioned above in this thread.

I checked out the 2000 through 2003 results and I'm not sure that I understand. KBC helmets passed all performance tests for the helmets tested except the TK-9. Does that mean all the KBC's are safe except the TK-9? I admit that a couple of the KBC's failed because of labeling but I don't know if that matters or not.:nerd

I checked out the links and I don't recognize any of those helmets. Are those the brain buckets that the Harley guys wear? I would not be surprised if those did not pass. I don't know that a brain injury to someone wearing that type of helmet will really matter.:laughing

Your links did not, as far as I can tell, indicate that the TK-8, VR-1 or other full face, race style helmets failed. So what is your point?

I think the bottom line is that we would all like to see comparative testing of helmets in several different categories. I think one thing that is interesting is that there is no consensus on what the testing should be!!!!!!!!!!

On another issue - "bells and whistles." I will agree that my TK-8 is noisy and gets a lot of lift at high speed. I am sure that almost every Arai and Shoei is better in those two categories!

Dont get me wrong, KBCs are great helmets, but everyone has a recall every now and then!
 
Standard lists for KBC Racer-1?

The KBC website lists the following line in the information for their Racer-1 helmet:

"STANDARDS_Snell, DOT, BS 6658 TYPE A, EC22/05 and ACU approved."

So, it is not listed on the Snell website, what's up with this?

Is there a list of helments somewhere for the BS 6658 certification? I couldn't find it on any of the given links.
