damaged a head bolt thread in the engine case. I have been advised to use helicoil and told keen sert is the only way to go. Anyone with long term use of both to give an opinion?

I've never liked helicoils BUT all the real, true machinists I know swear by them. Like painting, its all in the prep. Getting the hole bored square, cleaned and the insert installed correctly and they work great. Go half assed and they fail for any number of reasons. They were originally developed for the airplane industry and they are notoriously finicky about quality. I've never used a keensert but they look similar to time certs which I have used and they work well but do need a certain wall thickness in order to function properly.

the keensert locks in place with little tabs, whereas the heli-coil needs the fastener to be installed to properly "grab" the inside of the hole properly.

keenserts are stronger and MUCH harder to pull out, BUT (as was mentioned above) needs a MUCH LARGER HOLE for the installation (a 10-32 keensert needs a 5/16 hole) so in high stress areas (like for cylinder heads) IF you have enough material to handle the modification without weakening anything, go with the keensert.

I always used keenserts on high stress areas, or where I had damaged threads INSIDE the motor, and heli-coils for like side cases, and valve covers and such.
