What do I need to do to keep my personalised plate when I sell my motorbike to a third party?

I’m not going to use it with another motorbike. I’m retiring it. But want to keep the plate as souvenir.

I’ve looked up, but am still confused. Thanks.

Not daft at all...

Exceptions for Special License Plates*

An exception to the standard rule applies to specialized or personalized plates, which are registered to you personally. This includes plates with custom lettering, as well as those issued for disabled persons, disabled veterans, or members of certain organizations.

When selling a car with these types of plates, you must remove them before the buyer takes possession. You then have the option to transfer these plates to another vehicle you own or surrender them to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Failing to remove your personal plates could result in them being transferred to the new owner.

*This is NOT from a DMV webpage.

Iinky to actual DMV page

I don't think you are going to like the 'pay us forever' codicil...

21.200 Personalized License Plates Retention (VC §5109)

A personalized license plate owner may remove and retain his/her license plates without reassigning them to another vehicle provided the license plate retention fee is paid each year (VC §5106(b)).

Retentions—The procedures below be must followed:

  • A Special Interest License Plate Application (REG 17) form, which shows the personalized license plate configuration and requests of the license plates.
  • The retention fee. The fee is due for each year whether or not the license plates are assigned to a vehicle.

I just transferred my PP. I did let the dude who bought my car take them. And when he got a temp he returned it.

I got a few I am paying for that are historical.
One will be on a new bike in a few months.

I don’t recall. 10 minute visit to AAA.

Took my new plates. Took my old plates and I signed something :laughing

I have had my plates on 6 different bikes. I have always gone to AAA and got a new plate and took my PP off before I sold the bike. Then put the plates on my new bike.

Not my situation. The buyer needs to ride away with my bike and my plate.

Can he go to the DMV, say a fib that he doesn’t have a plate, get a new one, and later return mine?

I tried to register a bike that was missing the vanity plate. It was a full stop at the DMV. My options were to surrender the plate that I didn't have, register the bike with the plate that I didn't have, get the PO to pay for the plate.

Go to DMV with buyer, they will issue a new plate on the spot. If that’s a problem, go toDMV or AAA or any registration service and handle it before the buyer takes the bike.

If you want the plate only for a souvenir, report the plate lost, and get a new from the DMV. You can then retire and turn in the new plate when you sell the bike.

I can't say enough about AAA. In my never ending quest to buy el cheapo vehicles with dubious, out of state, two party titles, I've gotten in the habit of having the seller meet me at a AAA office, take the paper work in, and they will tell me what I have to do and how much it will cost. :thumbup
