Keeping my personalised plates

I had similar issues to @Enchanter - bought a bike with a personalized plate, couldn't get it registered, went through weeks of hassle and $$$ and eventually got a new plate. I asked the prior owner of she wanted her PP back and she said no, so it's on the wall in my garage. I warned her she might get charged every year for it and she said she'd keep an eye out for a bill from the DMV, but she never contacted me about it - and that was several years ago

The bike was already sold. Luckily the buyer is a close friend and lives nearby. And he needed the bike right away for his main means of transport. I’ll sign and take the DMV form to him tomorrow. And he goes to AAA next week. And I’ll collect my plate soon.

I was really hoping for an easier solution. This small paperwork isn’t too bad.

Late to the party....sorry.
Mark....are you selling your freshly repaired BMW?
(that would make me sad)

I did let the new buyer take the vehicle with the vanity plate, return it after he did his thing, and then do the swap at AAA.

I did recently sell a bike with a vanity plate that left the state. I kept the plate. Not sure of the status but hope to use it assuming I can ride again one day.

Everything was going smooth until the DMV told the buyer I filled an older version of the form. Blimey. New 2025 form filled, signed and posted. We’re nearly there.

New owner has his new plate on the bike. Old plate will be back Saturday. Yay.

Found this thread by accident in search,
I did lose my cdona plate in Az, someone snagged it last ten years.
I did retain three other Az plates that weren't renewed,
So, I now have three wall hangers of CDONA, one Az, two SD.

Take them off the bike.
Sell bike without plates.
Keep plates.
DMV is OK.
This is all that you need to know. I've done this multiple times since I don't believe in having "normal plates", so every license plate I've had for about two decades has been a personalized one.

The new owner can ride it home without a plate on it if they have the signed over title with them and can explain the situation. They shouldn't expect to ride further on it later without a plate though.

I have purchased multiple cars with personalized plates in California and nobody at the DMV needed to see the plate. They just gave me a new one when I asked for it. One I took back to the previous owner, to be nice, but another I just tossed in the trash.

I wouldn't trust the new buyer to return the plate. [Edit: unless it's a friend. :cool]

So I have a bunch of old plates in a frame in my garage and nine of them are personalized - from all three states that I've lived in. Some were from vehicles that were sold, some when I moved to a different state, and one that someone else grabbed when I let the registration lapse.

The only time I've been asked by the DMV to return a personalized plate was when I wanted to change one car to something else and they needed the old one. So that's one of the few that I've owned that didn't make it to the framed collection in my garage.

Az quality is dropping, MUDLY was the first, all stamped, and spaced nicely.
I got to keep it, didn't ask for or expect a new mudly, one was sent, all jammed together, @ 7 digit spacing.
not 5 digit spacing.
I showed this to my MVD clerk, sad.
