kids on e-bikes?

Around here the kids on e'bikes have thus far been well behaved.

Some of the 20 somethings riding their throttle bikes at 30+ on the walking/biking trails?

Not so much.

Some of the comments here remind me the 20-30 year old grown men I saw on mini-bikes. Doing their stunts in an empty parking lot is OK but doing it on a busy public road and disregarding others sharing that same road, not so much.

Kid in our neighborhood got taken down by a car turning right at an intersection. Hurt but not seriously. Mom is screaming on Nextdoor that the driver was at fault and local popo won't charge. The spawn was on a Sur ron ebike and according to mom, he swears he was not going more then 20 mph. Mom admits the bike is not street legal but insists he was only going 3 blocks to ride the trails. This is the mentality that these kids are learning.
When we were young and stupid, if you fucked up, you owned up to it. If you broke your arm falling out of the tree house you built on a vacant lot, your parents didn't sue the lot owner, the guy who gave you the scrap lumber and the town for letting it happen.

I hope the kids riding these things take responsibility for their actions.

my son rides one, he was taught to obey traffic laws and everything else that relates as to if it was a full motorcycle.. but all families are different, kids learn from their parents, or not.

It’s wild seeing how common it’s become. A few years ago, no kid in the neighborhood had an electric bike, and now they’re everywhere. At least it gets them outside instead of glued to screens, even if the speeds can be sketchy.

Back a 100 years ago Honda was just appearing on the scene and pull start mini bikes swarmed the neighborhoods. When I see kids hot dogging around on their bikes it gives me hope for the future.

Yesterday my early teen son rolled up to the house with his posse for a backyard trampoline session:

1 surron
1 e ride pro
2 super 73
1 radpower
1 ?? (Surron eride style moto)

Kids all had helmets, more than half were full face.
All smiles and stoke
Gone for the entirety of the day till dusk.
Bouncing from one house to the other, to the park, trails, etc.

Perfect.

My kid has the super 73, I told him class 1, 2 or 3 only if riding on the street and too bad if the other kids go faster, they should not be on the road with the e motos. My kid understands we follow the laws or he can pedal or walk

It's up to parents to know the laws and guide their kids to ride legally and responsibly. I don't agree with young kids having e motos on the road, but it's not my place to stop them (unless I see them doing something really reckless.)

adults? well it's up to individual responsibility and we know how that goes.
I went up mt umunhum the other day and zipped past two kids on surron type bikes wearing full face mountain bike helmets/ gear. All I could think was you know what hell yeah looks super fun. If I had one at that age instead of a normal mountain bike I’d be ripping around all the time too. As long as they use some sense I don’t see an issue especially out on less populated roads.

Indeed.

It's not jealousy. Get that out of your head. You might think differently if you thought it was cool with some douchebag riding a wheelie through an intersection where someone had the right away and almost killed him because he doesn't understand traffic lights.

It's been a huge problem in my community here in South Orange County. It's not just these assclowns disobeying traffic laws and riding like idiots. They are offensive to residents and harassing even elderly people. A couple weeks ago, I dropped my grocery basket because this moron surprised me out of nowhere riding his e-bike throw the aisle. Maybe a year ago, I stepped in because this 'gang' were stopping an old man from pulling out of his parking space. I didn't even say anything, I just walked up on the scene and they fled. Fucking cowards. I could tell you stories upon stories. Happens every single day with these teens pretending they are invincible. These are not isolated incidents to just me. OCPD is in the gray area of doing what they can to solve the problem. A big problem is many of these clowns are riding e-bikes that are only off-road legal in the first place. OCPD is stepping up in impounding them more than they were 2-3 years ago.

I can only speak for my area but it's way far past "kids will be kids". I'm sure 90% clearly have never been slapped and punched for the dumb shit they're doing. I'm not trying to be a Karen here... I don't like bullies and it's unfortunate that a lot of these losers act like bullies with no consequence to their actions.

Personally, I don't exactly get it. These e-bikes aren't exactly cheap. If I was going to take that kind of money, I'd rather buy a 5-10 year old small dirtbike to ride around town for random errands. But I'm not 15, so...

This is not kids getting a start at being full-fledged motorcyclists in the future. It's just a bunch of entitled assholes. If they were required to take a written test, actually learn the rules of the road, take a riding test and get licensed, they would not be riding e-bikes because that would be too much effort. One of my best friend's daughter rides her e-bike to school and to work. She does not care about turning into a rider later in life even when I speak the gospel of two wheels when I'm at her mom's house for game nights. It's a convenient tool for her, that's it. A step up from riding a bicycle but far from being a future full-fledged motorcycle rider. That's just anecdotal though...

Disclaimer: On the surface level, I have no problem with e-bikes. I think they're a great solution for short distance transportation, especially in congested cities. My friends in Los Angeles, San Fracisco, urban cities like that, their experience is very different than mine. More of it is utilitarian use of e-bikes by adults and that makes sense. Not the latest fad their parents bought them so they don't have to actually be attentive parents.
100%. These are exactly my thoughts. Thank you for this.
