Klim gear

On the other hand, I bought a 2001 Ford Escape, happy to find what seemed to be a well-made, union-built car. A few years later, a few thousand miles after the warranty had expired, it stranded me deep in the Bechler Wilderness, with a bad tranny.

I replaced it with a Toyota, and aside from a few issues, it's been solid. I am guessing it will still be running at 300K. So there are those considerations, too. No one should be obligated to buy junk, just because it says Made in USA on it.

Lots of Toyotas are made in USA, and lots of Fords are made in mexico. Both companies are publicly held so its not like one is really more American than the other.

American market Toyota trucks have been made in the USA since the early 90's.

Yes, but Nummi is not building cars anymore. I have purchased 4 trucks/cars that were made there, and am saddened that Toyota abandoned it's partnership with GM.
Ford is like most car makers, they purchase parts and so assembly all over the globe. In fact VW is the largest employer in Mexico last time I checked.
They may even be building the old air cooled beetle there to this day...but I haven't checked lately.

My Escape was built in Illinois. My FJ was built in Japan.
