Knife on hip while riding, is it legal in CA?

If I went down, I'm pretty sure I would rather not have a 12" fixed-blade knife clipped to my side, but then that's just me.

be be aware that any county, city, town, and community can change, add, modify any knife law to fit there anti freedom ways. :wow

what is legal in one place can get you a felony charge in another. :thumbdown

laws should not prevent people from doing. it should only be if one is doing wrong to another. :afm199

aka: no harm if i have a ar-15 (loaded with a thirty round mag) and on my shoulder.. (in a sling that is). or even a loaded pistol under my shirt.
crime if i use said to hurt, rob another.

no crime if i have (any knife) on my person seen or NOT.

lots of things are a crime to just have these days. i bet a anti freedom police chief can get a search warrant for your place and find something to put you in jail on a felony charge.

that is any person in any home across this country. :thumbdown

I personally haven't seen it, but I do recall that in Sons of Anarchy, a lot of the characters carry a Ka-Bar in a similar fashion. Maybe it's a trend following the T.V. series.

MC riders have been carrying knives long before SOA. Before motorcycles became so popular in the mainstream, the kind of guys that rode motorcycles were often the kind of guys who like to carry big knives.

And yes, you can carry a machete...ask Zilla

I see bikers throwing knife waves instead of 2 fingers in da future:teeth

back in the day it was a folding buck knife on my belt.

but these days just a cheap razer blade folding knife some where in a pocket, or pouch.

Exactly my point. SoA spawned a lot of trends in motorcycling. It didn't "create" anything really, but once the show came out you started seeing every other Dyna wearing the little mini fairing/headlight surround. Maybe the knives are catching on into more of a mainstream thing thanks to the show.

P.S. When I take long rides or trips, I carry a rather large knife with me. The number one tool you could have in a survival situation is a knife.

I always carry a folding knife and in my tank bag I have a 3" ESEE knife. They're pretty fucking badass knives and would do well if I needed it. If I were to a long, multi day trip, I would certainly carry me ESEE 5" in my luggage or pack.

Knives are key to everyday living for me.

My Kershaw folder will spring wide open and lock if I drop it from waist high onto a hard floor.

What if it's not a knife?

This. I keep an Opinel #7 with my gear but I certainly don't use a pocket, folding or other personal knife every day. I do butter a bagel practically every morning though. lol on the Bowie 'open carry' crowd.

how about a knife by another name?

not a knife by legal name,
or intended use,
as is a poor cutter even.

but a WWII "bayonet", entrenching tool.

not on ones hip. but in a side bag / tail bag / backpack?
lock or not. the bayonet would be in its carry container.
yes possibly "hidden from view". for carry on a belt (other) just bulky while on the bike.
not to hide said item except to keep it from being taken, easer to transport, etc.

????????

I have no idea WTF you just said, but....

Concealed dirk or dagger laws only apply to a knife carried on the person. Tank bag, center console, glove box, dashboard are all ok as long as the knife is otherwise legal to possess. Knives that are illegal to possess are illegal regardless of how they are carried.

A bayonet is a knife.
A box cutter is a knife.
A concealed flathead screwdriver can be charged as a dirk or dagger.
Semantics don't mean a thing.

I'm pretty sure in order to be a switchblade it has to have some sort of assist mechanism, or open from gravity alone. Most nice knives can be opened without touching the blade if you try.

If you only have the use of one hand, automatic opening knives are OK ;or if the blade is less than 2" in length,
I think that's the only exception as far as carrying them goes.

It's my understanding that you can own that type of knife, but not have it on your person.

Funny thing is, a few years ago I was in Germany, and saw switchblade type camping knives, made for the German Boy Scouts. I guess over there, they don't get all "Rebel Without a Cause" when it comes to cutlery.

In fact it looks like you could even buy one, if you wanted one.

Thanks to some teenage delinquent movies in the '50's, they passed a law against automatics in 1958. Silly.

The last time I was stopped, the CHP officer was nice enough to remove my Kershaw Blur (blade length 3 3/8 inches) from my rear pocket before I even got off my bike.

He also complemented me on the model choice, then "requested" I put it in my pillion, which I complied.
