Last week you guys gave me suggestions, and my dad took them up and bought his new '08 KTM Duke today. I'll post pics when I get some.

On another note, he said the dealer was talking up a storm about the new KTM RC8. Clicky

Any comments good or bad about this new supersport?

If you read the magazines you'll find out that RC8 is very slow. They said that it is a nice bike but it will take KTM a while to compete with Ducati. I'm glad that I got my 1098 as I was going to get RC8 late this year.

it's at least 20 hp down on the 1198. vs. the 1098 it makes about 10 hp more.

The 1148cc v-twin engine matches the 1098S on the dyno with an impressive 150-odd horsepower at the rear wheel. It's also very light, at 188kg ready to race, but without fuel, which should put it right on par with the Ducati as well. The motor is both powerful and extremely smooth and refined, according to initial tests.

First Gizmag does not know anything about bikes. Read Fast Bikes and you'll see them say that the bike is as fast as GSXR 750. They gave it 8 out of 10 and said that it had a weak engine. They estimate 120HP on the dyno while plain 1098 dynos in 150s.

The also had pics of a a naked chick with the bike! I think the RC8 looks better than the 1098. the snap off plate holder and mirrors are really cool to.

So, who actually ran the bike on a dyno? There's a big discrepency between 150 measured rwhp and 120 estimated rwhp, if Gizmag actually measured its output.

Besides, I'm absolutely positive that KTM could get just a few more ponies out of nearly 1200cc than 120 at the rear wheel - especially with as much money as they threw at that thing.

Anyone have links to actual dyno plots?

-Q!

It appears that Gizmag is less than credible, as the first paragraph refers to "BMW, Aprilia, and 675 Triple..." as the new Heavyweight Superbike contenders. (As if "675 Triple" is a manufacturer of motorcycles that is developing a Super Bike)
Shouldn't they sight their sources when making claims about dyno numbers and the like?

Not only that,Who can actually ride either bike to their potential? Not too many here on BARF I'd bet.So who cares if it doesn't measure up to the Duc.As much as I'm a Duc fan,I like that KTM is building this bike.Competition is good for everyone. Now if they would only redesign the upper/headlight area.

Looks good from the back and the side, the headlight looks outa place. Race fairings will correct it though.

well i if remember correctly off the top of my head RC8 was over seas for what a year or so... now its gonna be the first "american" version, with all the emision and noise polutions goodies... I personally believe that Its gonna have a grip of problems... off the line. Sence the 1st year model you NEVER buy.. but who knows they may have knocked out all the bugs in the previous year.. now im definately a fan of duke and rc8. I can see a RC8 in my garage

That video makes me wish Top Gear did bikes. That's probably to most beautiful and detailed motorcycle video I've seen.

All the bikes mentioned on this thread are beyond my ability to take them to thier design limits- I am no Nickey Hayden, and never will be.

the video pumps me so full of adrenalin, that I need to go and punch something, which sucks, because I work at a hospital, and punching patients is frowned upon.

fuckin liberals. :laughing

Punch them, treat them, and if they say anything with hold their med's. They'll learn.

So what you're saying is: KTM managed to get less power than a 999 out of an additional 200ccs of displacement? I think the fast bike guys may have spent too much time in a sealed dyno room. :laughing

Either that or KTM sent them a superduke and they couldn't tell the difference. :laughing

Also, the Euro pricing puts the RC8 as cheaper than the 1098S by a decent amount. We'll see what pricing will end up like out here.

They claim 155hp and 440 pound wet weight. Personally, for me, the track rules all, so I'll pass judgement when I have a chance to ride one. Posing and street ridability are eh, although i'd take one in a heartbeat if i could ride it on the track and still street it.

Edit: I bumped this one because I saw that someone had posted this totally awesome video: http://www.ktm-rc8.net/fileadmin/rc8/video/vid_2.php , which is what I was going to link. :( :laughing
