Kymco Supernex 6-Speed Electric Superbike

Lots of talk about the gearbox and against it, I guess you guys don't like shifting.

Since I own an electric motorcycle with a 6speed here are some of my observations. A transmission is all about efficiency. An electric motor has a rpm range where it is most efficient. The empulse is around 6k rpm. If you ride it out of that range you are putting extra load on the motor and making your electrical system work harder and gobbling up your electrons. So to ride the empulse efficiently you need to keep it in that rpm range.

6 speeds in my opinion is too much, I honestly think 3-4 speeds is enough maybe 5. I never really use the 6th gear on the Empulse even have going down a tooth on the countersprocket.

Having a gearbox is more maintenance. It needs oil changes, clutches wear out, clutch components.

Also there is regen. You can maximize regenerative braking with a gearbox. At higher rpms you get greater regen, much loke engine braking in a gas engine.

The transmission allows you have a smaller motor also, but yes it does take up space when you can plop a bigger motor.

Electric motors don't have fullpower all the time also, your thinking about torque, it has full torque when you twist it, but it makes the greatests horsepower at higher rpms. You can lug the electric motor but eats up more power.

even if ppl like shifting so much that they'd want it on an electric bike, did it really need a clutch lever? theres no idle, so u don't need it to stop. they explicitly say quickshifter and clutchless downshifts. so whats the damn point of the lever, ugh.

"Liking shifting" sounds kind of like a little demasculating thing. The gearbox in any vehicle serves a purpose and you don't *have* to use it, nor the clutch. Just find the gear closest to 1:1 and leave it there if you want. Back in the day we used to kind of/not really joke about how cr500's only needed third.

I wonder if Kymco picked a motor or motor controller that would actually do that well. smoothing out how well an electric motor starts to turn is somewhat complicated. if they cut corners there, it could suck.

hard to clutch up wheelies without a clutch ;)
