I'm down in LA for work and actually have my weekend off, which is rare. I've got a rental bike and looking for suggestions.

Staying in Santa Monica, and don't want to go near Mulholland.

Was thinking of heading up the cost and riding 33 on Saturday, maybe head over to the Angeles Forrest as well, or perhaps save that for Sunday.

Route suggestions? What can't I miss?

Just did HWY 33 last weekend and it's awesome. We also did the ridge road above Santa Barbara and that's a kick.

Here are some great roads in southern California:
Hwy 33 north out of Ojai
Angeles Crest hwy 2
Hwy 138 from I15 to Crestline
Hwy 18 from Crestline to Big Bear to hwy 38 Redlands
Hwy 243 Banning to Idylwild
Hwy 74 Idywild to Hemet (ride it both ways up and down)
Sage road from Hemet to Hwy 371 to Hwy 79 to Hey 76 to top of Palomar
Hwy 79 through Julian
Hwy 74 between Lake Elsinore and San Juan Capistrano
There are lots of side routes along many of those places as well.

33 is the best in socal, if you ask me. (Still never rode Angeles Crest Highway)

Thanks y'all. Going to hit 33 Saturday AM and see where the day takes me.

Picking up my rental R1200GS tomorrow.

Oh man you shoulda came with us to Taft last weekend! On Saturday I did SR 33 from Taft to Ojai, then SR 126E -> I5S -> 210E [exited Sunland Blvd] to take Oro Vista/Big Tujunga Canyon Rd. up to Angeles Crest and turned around at Wrightwood]

Detailed report below:
SR-33: perfect pavement, narrower road, tighter turns (not as bad as Mines). In the morning I rode past a horrific accident on 33, motorcycle versus car collision, sent the rider flying off the ravine, they closed the road for a few hours to helicopter the guy out. FYI, you'll likely be sharing the road with a few weekend cyclists, and watch out for cars making u-turns from lookout points across the 2 lane road. Suggest taking this early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid traffic, it's a pretty road to ride.

SR-2: felt like a race track in the mountains for me, there were some police enforcement (2 sheriff SUVs patrolling), but I thought it was the most "worth it" ride out of Taft rally for me. Road is wiiiide and the curves are sweepers, you can go really, really, really fast on some corners. It's 60 miles long so traffic distribution is pretty good, I felt like I had the road all to myself. The views are absolutely breathtaking. Not too many cyclists (and you'll have plenty of room to safely pass), more motorcyclists and car enthusiasts. They even have their own version of Alice's (Newcomb's Ranch - Kitchen closed at 3PM, place closes at 4PM). On the downhill section after passing Newcombs Ranch, be careful of the few baseball sized rocks on the road [pay attention to the Fallen Rock/Slide signs].

You are going to have a great time:thumbup

Wish I was around, just got to Lala Land Tuesday night. Thanks for the write up, I might be following your tracks.

Been a long time since I've been up there, but a notable thing about it is that it's simply pretty far away just to get there.

Angeles Crest is 1/2 hr from most anywhere in the greater LA Basin, so everyone and anyone can hop up there "for a quickie" if nothing else.

From "LA" to Ojai is 2hrs just to get to the base of the road.

So, it's really a "destination" kind of ride vs a standard weekend event.

It also doesn't "connect" anything of real population.

Another one of those roads they probably wouldn't make today.

What's the Squid and LEO factor like up there on 33 over the weekends?

North side towards Taft is remote like Mines Rd., I doubt you'll run into any LEO.

South side towards Ojai, maybe. Had a feeling I only ran into LEO/Firetruck/Ambulance due to the accident mentioned in my post.

Squid ratio, definitely a lot less than Mulholland:laughing

33 is usually pretty desolate. You might need to pass 2-3 cars. Just be careful of gravel on the inside of corners along the steep sections.

Not sure if it's close to your location - I had great fun on Angeles Forest Highway a couple weeks ago. Thanks to the barf folks that gave it a thumbs up.

That's not too far, I'll probably spend my Sunday up there, as I return the bike Sunday evening.

I'm okay with the 2 hour ride out to the base of 33, I'll take my time riding around, stopping for viewss and eats.

Scooped up the GS in Hawthorne and made my way back to Santa Monica. Bike doesn't feel like it's in the best shape, getting some weird feelings and hearing some weird things, but it's been quite a few years since I was on a 1200GS. I imagine I'll get used to it quickly, as I did last time. Only big bummer is the rear tire is flat down the center pretty severely.

Oh well, looking forward to getting up and riding in the morning.

33 is great

33 is a good ride, better on weekday AMs, though.
Laurel Canyon not bad either, but crazy rich people in fast cars, just like Mulholland.

I dunno, there are a lot of good roads in So Cal, but if you're riding 33, you're probably not missing them.

33 is nice, don't get me wrong, but Cerro Noroeste (now mistakenly named Hudson Ranch Rd) is far better and is in the same area. Actually, it Ts into 33. If you ride 33 and don't ride Cerro Noroeste you've done yourself a huge disservice.

Cerro is fun both directions, but the views northbound are freaking unbelievable.

This was actually on my list.

Was going to do 33-166-Hudson Ranch-Lockwood Valley back to Ojai.

I was considering not taking Lockwood back, and, instead, heading over towards Castiac State park and checking out some of those roads, as they looked squiggly on google maps.
