leather vs textile??

Such in encouragement :cry

Nah, i understand what your getting at. I do plan on looking into some knee/chin guards like supertireguy suggested.

Also, supertireguy i do wear boots on my commute. However, for little trips around town i do wear tennis shoes well skater shoes.. go ahead.. flame on :(

Please let me know what BARF rides you go on so I can avoid. It takes SO LONG to clean gravel out of an ankle that it ruins the ride for everyone. (My right ankle got sanded in a bicycle crash 30 years ago and still bothers me.)

It looks like some goregasm photos were needed to refocus your rider safety gear thought processes. Being a cripple sucks and we don't want you to learn this lesson the hard way.

No harshing intended. We wouldn't waste our time if we didn't care about your safety.

Some folks think open face helmets are good protection in a crash. This is your face. This is your face on asphalt. What do you think?

Thanks, good looking out to all of you! :thumbup

I think maybe because i've been riding for a few years now without knee/chin guards or anything for my lower half (unless its raining) that i just overlooked it or maybe assumed i didn't need it.

Thanks,

Textile is somewhat known to be "one time use". Most likely if a mishap occurs in textile, it's trashed. Leather tends to hold up better and is sustainable.

I'm just going to add to the list here:

I've got the scars on my knees from crashing at around 35mph in dickies. I got lucky and rolled. Still ripped the shit out of my knees.

Sadly, i was just like you and nothing anyone could do would convince me to ride just to and from school with some overpants or something. I would have walked away from that accident with no damage to me at all...But i had to be a dumbass and not get something to cover my legs, and I was completely gimpy for a month as a result.

I wear all my gear...I assume i won't need it, but i wear it anyways. It's been years and probably 50,000 miles since i've done anything but drop a bike at sub 15mph...but i'm more fastidious about my gear now than i ever was then. I've seen what can happen, I remember blood running down my legs into my skate shoes, and it sucks. The accident wasn't due to me acting like an idiot, either, just going to school...She made the left in front of me without looking, and i dumped it avoiding her.

On the streat, Aerostich.

On the track, quality leathers.

I plan on having sex with Helen Mirren next week. Both of our plans are going to be equally successful. YOU are not in control of when you are going to crash. No matter HOW good a rider you are. And the first time that jean clad knee hits the pavement at 60 mph I guarantee you will be introduced to a world of pain and shit you have never experienced. I used to ride in jeans on short trips, till a slippery spot put me down on my knee and I limped for over a year after. That was at 25 mph

I hope you're taking your time machine back to 1960 :ride

It wasn't sustainable but my skin is intact! This was at 70+mph armor ground down at the shoulder and knee but didn't reach me. No injuries just soreness. Not sure how it would look if it was leather, but I'm sure i'd still be able to wear it.

So other then leather holding up better through a crash theres not much difference? How about warmth wise? I ride just about year long for 50-60 miles one way. So warmth and keeping me dry through rain is part of the equation.

Supertireguy- to be honest unless its raining my bottom half is normally just covered by a pair of jeans and maybe some thermals.

I just wear a rainsuit over my leathers. The rainsuit will help keep you warm too because its pretty much windproof. I have a rev it blizzard,it has armor built into it though, which is pretty much retarded as it would shred like wet newspaper in a crash. It is nice and insulated as well as having a breathable waterproof membrane. Check it out, about 150.

To the OP, if you're gonna be commuting in the rain, neither of those are good choices. Get a waterproof Aerostich.

Textiles like that A* you linked to are one crash, ride it only to the store kind of jackets in my opinion. If you're really riding, get leather and get something on your lower body. If you want to wear jeans, at least go get one of those padded girdles from TPro or TLD and some knee/shin guards. You can slide em right under your jeans.

I have a textile jacket, but it is just for short trips around town.

I seriously hate my current textile jacket. Armor shifts all the time, and the wrist is gigantic, making it so that I have to fold it over to put it in my gloves.

Definitely, DEFINITELY, go leather.

I will throw all my leather gear in the dumpster and get full synthetics, THE SAME DAY that the boys in the MotoGP start racing in textiles.

until then - i'll get the best protection money can buy - LEATHER!

i like the soft supple feel of pleather.

If you can only purchase one go with the leather.

I have both a leather and textile. I use my textile to daily commute and it dosent let air in at night when I ride home from work (it gets cold sometimes). The leather is heavier but will protect better, I just cant daily with an A* MX-1 jacket everyday.

leather jacket w/armor no doubt. I wear moto jeans with icon field leg armor underneath and moto boots on the lower half.
