There's a link between autism and intestinal bacteria emerging in clinical research. Turns out intestinal bacteria have effects far beyond the intestinal tract. This raises the possibility that diet and antibiotic use actually have an impact on autism.
As it happens, Wakefield's paper was based on children presenting to a GI clinic for chronic intestinal complaints.
This might well be the direction autism research ends up going. The microbiome is being touted as the answer to everything. My concern with this is it's still a little chicken and egg; what manifest first? Did a disturbance in the microbiome trigger the autism, or, did the development of autism via predisposing genetic factors lead to a chemical imbalance enabling an altered microbiome? It will be fascinating to follow the progress of these ideas.
