Looking for reference material for suspension data acquisition

I was wondering if there's anyone on here that would know of some reference material that explains the ins and outs of understanding suspension data acquisition readings? I'm well aware that in most cases technology like this in the hands of a mere mortal like myself is useless but I wanted to add something to my track experience that made it more interesting then just riding against the watch.

I've searched the internet up and down and there is a wealth of car information but very light in terms of motorcycle based information. If there's anyone that would have the time to layout the basics for me I would appreciate it. Either way, whether it's off the internet, a book store or good old personal experience I'm open to any help.

Thanks.

P.S. XT has finally updated the software end of the GPX and is now able to determine shaft velocity, which from what I understand is the most important information?

Shawnery, you really should just start working with Kamal. You'll get alot from it, if for just the year.

I thought the diameter had an inverse effect on shaft velocity.

Yes, according to the girlfriend.

+1... though i asked my gf and she just went :wtf. hehe

yes, def. in a perfect world, the damping constant is proportional to the velocity of the mass in motion. something like mx'' = -kx - cx' where x is position and (') are derivatives, such that x' is velocity and x'' is acceleration. c would be your damping constant.

Tony Foale's book (which you can find here www.tonyfoale.com) has quite a lot of info concerning suspension. ive read everything relevant to suspension dynamics in the old version and its very helpful. i hear the new version (which i cant find for "free") has 100pages of even better stuff.

other than that, any college text on Harmonic Motion will build up your basics on whats going on here if u dont know it all yet... but ive never come across a reference material that says something like "if your data plot looks like this.... then change this...."

Ernie, if you did if fact inverse the shaft the velocity would be affected.

Sell bmw and buy sv, than you can enjoy things like actually riding bike. :)

does the compulsion to twiddle with adjusters come from the fact that all the adjusters are new and shiny or from the fact that there are soooo many adjusters?

I'd say the nut behind the wrench is the issue :) It's just easier to hire a good nut that knows the wrench front to back and be done with it.

That should sound REALLY familiar, right Shawnery?? If I find it, I'm going to post that entire list I gave you when you asked me to be your "mentor" in your quest to return to roadracing two years ago. You have literally done the complete opposite of everything I told you to do and now you're sitting here asking 20 million questions trying to figure out how to tame a 200+ hp superbike. How are things working out overall??

I'm pretty sure this is not a violation of the TOS because these are my words written to Shawnery in 2009 but in his warped little mind he can somehow interpret this as someone being an a-hole:

Have you really thought this through? Is your wife and kids really and truly ok with you back racing?? Even if they are, I worry that you will ride tentatively, worrying too much about NOT crashing and unfortunately that's exactly when you're likely to fall down and get hurt. You have nothing to prove to anyone, but if you're really set on going racing I will take you under my wing with a few conditions:
1. No 1000! Your comeback would be on a SV650 so you can clean up your riding. After one year on SV you can race whatever you want.
2. You pit with me. I don't care that you run Pirelli tires, I'm around you all weekend.
3. You come back with a different racing number and we start with a clean slate.
4. No posting on Barf, SBR or any other forum until 2010 season is over. If you are really doing this for YOU then nobody else needs to be involved online.
5. You will keep a low profile at the races. You are working on YOU, not what anyone else thinks about you and you have 100% focus on riding.

I have probably already discouraged you enough that you won't race or at the very least you won't want to have a drill sergeant for a mentor. Ball is in your court if you decide to sign up for the 2010 Florea boot camp...

Alex

Shawnery, the RC is run looser than the other forums, but you're really toeing the line there. If your post is reported, we'll put a vote up to suspend. Clean it up or take a break, said as a moderator (which I don't like doing).

BTW, I don't think Alex is being an asshole. His plan that he laid out is a good one for anyone with your history coming back to racing. And it's "you're"...not your. I wanted to suspend you for screwing that up!

Shawnery,

The basics of suspension data acquisition readings start with data from the throttle position, brake pressure and lean angle. Once these are understood, and under control, suspension data can be useful.

I'd like to invite you to our seminar, "Motorcycle Racing with Data". It will be a day learing about data acquisition from a racer's viewpoint:

  • What it is and how it works
  • What it does for you, and what it doesn't
  • Integrating it into your racing program
  • Using it to become a faster, smoother, safer rider

Followed by a track day with Pacific Track Time and Feel Like A Pro:

  • Create your own data
  • Analyze it over several sessions
  • Measure your performance and improvement
  • On a Ninja 250 ...

It will be May1-2 at Thunderhill; classroom on Sunday, Track Day on Monday (only 7 spots for the Track Day).

Let me know...

Kamal

How Much Kamal? Have you worked with the RLC Racing stuff ever?

Kamal = the man.

For anyone trying to "figure out" data acquisition, I highly recommend working with Kamal, as I have done this past year. I like to think of myself as a pretty smart guy, but it would have taken me ages to figure out any of what I'm doing with data acquisition now.

This is meant as a compliment in every way, considering the amazing transformation you have made in the time I was gone I would be a fool not to take every bit of advice you share, you have come a LONG way!!
