Loud Pipes Save Lives?

thats one of the reasons i got my graves exhaust for r1 cause its really loud for safty reasons heh

1) safety, people hear you, notice ya more
2) sounds cool, looks cool
3) adds like 2-4 hp but thats not what i cared about since i am content with the hp on my bike already

I think loud is OK to a point. But megaphones and such just piss me off. I hear them from the street throughout the summer at 1:00 am, throttles WFO on a mostly empty street. Cheers to budman (and others) for showing respect to others when it comes to noise. And yes I think stock pipes are too quiet :)

harleys are a bit too loud i must say tho... its the only exhaust that really hurt my ears.

and im a guy who loves very loud music in cars, clubs, and headphones. i am damaging my ear, and cant hear half the shit out there, but yet, a harley exhaust can hurt it...

kinda says something...

i also dont think it sounds good, but thats my opinion.

ok, now not to lay into you, but that's a bit of a generalization, wouldn't you say?

many harleys are a bit too loud, but not all of them... I have a few friends that have the stock system still on their bikes and they are damn quiet... I have baffled pipes on mine and they are louder than stock, but not very loud.

then again, I like the sound of them, but that's MHO.

I would say that harleys with drag pipes are too loud. I think some of the thunderheaders are a bit too loud too.

maybe you would say that harleys with any aftermarket pipes are too loud.

but I think both of us would agree that a harley with stock pipes is pretty quiet.

I think I'm up to about 18 cents now :D

well, i'll put it this way, loud pipes certainly don't DIMINISH your noticeability. and honestly, most motorcyclists like loud pipes. louder than stock at least. i think the beef comes from the fact that the absolute loudest bikes on the street are harleys. i live right near van ness and there are packs of roving harleys that seriously sound like a thunderstorm is hovering over your right eyelid.

of course not all harleys are loud and the renegades i had on my falco and the yosh can i have on my zrx are far from "quiet". but i've never been offended by the loudness of bikes other than harleys. and that has nothing to do with whether i like the sound or not because i do like medium loud harleys.

they definitely don't do a whole lot of good for noticeability though. the sound is, first off, coming out in a direction where the people who notice it are of the least threat. and second, the sound is kinda non-directional.

but, hey, almost all of us like loud pipes.

I am one of those people in minority who do not believe loud pipes save lives. I skipped this thread a while back, but now it has come back to life.

I believe that in 90% of the time that your loud pipe may be responsible for saving your life, that you as the rider have put yourself in a situation that needed saving to begin with. Yes I agree that there may be that 10% of the time that a dumb cager may cross paths with you and would have not noticed you if it weren't for your loud pipe, but whether that justifies having every motorcycle run loud pipes or not is another question.

By the same token, all small cars must run really loud pipes to be noticed by the huge trucks, right?

In most cases, I believe that if the rider is paying attention to the environment he/she is riding in, the rider can detect the potential problem and avoid it before it becomes deadly. I mean a potentially deadly situation should not go unnoticed and become unavoidable by the rider, regardless of what kind of pipe he/she has.

And for the record, I like the sound of my stock pipe. Don't like the looks of it, but the sound is just like whisper in my ears. :laughing

Heathen you should deffinately get out to the SF meet and have a "sound-off" with Melissa. She has got teh loudest, meanest most bad ass sounding exhaust I have ever hear on a vehicle. Notice I said vehicle. . .yes it is that :cool

this is off on a tangent but still under the loud pipes saves lives category:

all cop bikes used to be harleys. and believe me, when they came rolling down the road the bad guys got to running. that's one way of looking at saved lives.

This is a good topic to discuss. I feel that Faz does have a fair argument about the loud pipes but I think I'm going be pro for loud pipes. Even before I ever started getting into motorcycles I alway hear them before I see them. It can be a Harley or Sportbike but it they have a aftermarket exhaust, nothing outragous loud, I notice it before they are even close to me. For some people this might be annoying but I think as long as you don't rev around your home or while lane splitting it's cool.

I just starting ride my first bike, a 250 and personally feel it's not very loud. My friend rode my bike around the block and I could barley hear the exhaust 50 feet away.

i have the yosh rs-3 race baffle pipes on my tlr. as much as i like the way they sound i would never just park in front of someon's house and rev away. also i dont sit at stop lights and act cool since its obnoxious more than anything.

i wouldl ike to get the mackey stingray baffle pipe thingy on his tlr, that looks cool. if i can get two of those on one side it'll look like a gp bike : )

are those cherry bombs or something similar?

try "modulating headlights save lives" I'd rather be visible than heard

here, here :thumbup on the modulators, although I love a nice exhaust note, it doesn't have to be straight-pipe obnoxious either.

i heard the increase in sound heard is much greater behind you than in front or the sides?? my bikes is pretty loud. i never noticed it until some other rider that were following me mentioned it. i think in lane split maybe its different because of acoustics?? .02
