Laura strengthens into 'extremely dangerous' Category 4
Laura strengthened Wednesday into a menacing Category 4 hurricane, raising fears of a 20-foot storm surge that forecasters said would be "unsurvivable” and capable of sinking entire communities. Authorities implored coastal residents of Texas and Louisiana to evacuate and worried that not enough had fled.

The storm grew nearly 70% in power in just 24 hours to a size the National Hurricane Center called “extremely dangerous.” Drawing energy from the warm Gulf of Mexico waters, the system was on track to arrive late Wednesday or early Thursday as the most powerful hurricane to strike the U.S. so far this year.

“It looks like it’s in full beast mode,” said University of Miami hurricane researcher Brian McNoldy. “Which is not what you want to see if you’re in its way.”

One major Louisiana highway already had standing water as Laura's outer bands moved ashore. Winds began picking up as shoppers rushed into a grocery store in low-lying Delcambre, filling carts with chips and beer. Austin Domingues, 26, said his wife would likely evacuate, but he planned to stay put at his father's farm, where the house is 14 feet off the ground.
This hurricane has the potential of wreaking enormous damage, not only on landfall but as it traverses other states.

NWS is using the word "unsurvivable"... :wow

Well let's hope Jesse is okay over there...

My boss has a house just north of Houston, and a beach house on the Bolivar Penninsula. Beach house is about 10' above sea level.

Watching and waiting.

Ominous. Wow.

Storm surge 30 miles inland.. cripes.

+1 on Jesse.

Boarded up yesterday while most everyone else was saying "itll miss us" or "it won't be that bad" and headed out of town early this AM, which was already later than i wanted to leave but getting everything ready took longer than i expected.
Hope they're right, but I'm not one to chance something like that. Being a pessimist has its days.

Water was already really high when i left. Be nice to have a house to go back to, but it's only stuff...plus i took the bikes :laughing

Glad you got out.

There will always be those that remain behind.

You stand a far better chance against fire than water though. :(

It's going to be very very bad.

Fingers crossed for your home, family and friends in the area.

:thumbup stay safe. May your camaro be just as bitchin when you return.

I feel bad that even in a modern country with modern technology many are left to the mercy of mother nature and there's basically nothing we can do about it.
