Low/Med/High Speed Corners???

Which do you like and why??? Why don't you like the other 2 as much???

I like Medium speed corners. The VFR is too heavy for low-speed corners (not too flickable). And high speed corners just seem to risky on the street (though they are my favorite on the track) (ie. Turn1 Streets of Willow or turn 10 Laguna). Medium allows me to have fun carving it up, while not really suffering due to my bike's heavy weight.

I guess we should throw this out:

0-40 low speed
40-85 med speed
85-130 high speed
130+ die speed?

Med Speed corners....

WHY: Because I like to go fast through corners, not straights, but not super fast, I like to ride the twisties w/ some reserve, dont want to end up in the dirt, I can save the super high speed stuff for the track. Although not low speed, takes the fun out of it, I like the art of cornering, trying to master it like the pros on this board, so I find the medium between slow and fast.

:cool

I like 'em all, I'd have to say the the lower speed corners are my least favorite at the moment just due to the type of bike I am riding.

BTW, I am assuming that when you say "slow corner" you are referring to a corner that can only be taken at slow speed even when taken aggressively, i.e. extremely sharp hairpins, etc.

Knowing when to get on the gas becomes critical, and sometimes, that's just not as much fun, especially when you're having an off day.

I really haven't had a chance to fully experience high speed corners, as I haven't had a chance to hit the track yet. But I imagine that I'll view them the same way I view the medium and low speed corners, as another kickass way to explore different aspects of the Black Arts of cornering.

Right now, I'd have to say that the low speed (tight) corners are the ones that are keeping me the most enganged as they're quite a bit more difficult to pull off successfully without killing your drive in the process.

High speed.

I feel the bike acts best in these corners, and they're the easiest!

low speed. Mucho lean angle at 40mph = much fun to be had. Although on the track, it doesn't matter as much.

I like both high speed..:teeth and medium speed too just as much when it's dakine..

Some slow stuff is okay..Corkscrew ...er....hum...CORKSCREW :p

Flopping from one to another at track speeds is REALLY fun!
Puck to puck series..
:smoking

I'm best at high speed corners, they let me carry my momentum through the corner better than the stop-turn-shoot style turns like 2 at Buttonwillow, or 7, 4, and 11 at Sears.

I try to make up for sucking at slow turns by being good on the brakes. The kink on the entrance to Turn 2 at Buttonwillow makes that difficult. That's probably my worst turn at any track.

After spending a good deal of time at Willow Springs, my "speed rating system" is pretty much as follows:

Slow: 3rd gear. I don't really use second on any AFM track barring the entrance to the Cyclone at Thunderhill or Turn 2 at Buttonwillow. 50 mph or less

Medium: 4th gear. 50 to 80 mph. Turn 2 at Thunderhill.

Fast: 5th or 6th gear. 80-110 mph. Turn 1 at Thunderhill, Turn 10 at Sears Point. Riverside (I take it in 6th) at Buttonwillow.

Stupid: 6th gear, geared tall. Turn 8 at Willow. Nothing else like it except maybe turn 1 at Brainerd. I'm geared for 140 mph in redline in 6th (~125-130 mph at AFM tracks), and am about 500 rpm from the limiter, knees skimming while the tires are just starting to come out.

My buddy Jeff crashed out of there once, he said you pray you never hit a rock as you never, ever, seem to stop sliding.

Have the need for speed? Go to Willow Springs and be a glutton for velocity. You'll get your fill and then some.

Does this mean you'll be taking the big GSXR to Willow sometime soon?

I was watching Kent Kunitsugu (SportRider Editor) at Streets of Willow and he is the smoothest rider I've ever seen... he took most of the turns (2, 3, & 4) in 2nd gear. I don't even think my FZR can get stupid-fast, I think it probably tops out at 100mph ( I wouldn't know without a speedo).

For me:

Low speed corner: Least favorite. I don't like the point and shoot style needed to go through a slow speed corner, like a hairpin or a 180.

Medium Speed corner: Tied. Med. speed corners require the best of all worlds. Late braking, Entry speed, Corner speed and exit drive. Awesome lean angles too!!!

High Speed corner: Tied but I had to pick a winner this would be it. Nothing requires more corner speed commitment than high speed corners. You either make up or lose a lot of time in these. A simple rolling off the throttle could mean the loss of a second!!!

Ultimate corner so far: Turn 8 at T-Hill. You have to trust yourself, your bike and your tires to the max if you want to go through 8 fast.

Worst corner: No such thing on a track. Every corner is awsome but some are more awesome than others. :p

For street: I love switchbacks/esses and high speed sweepers. I hate quick kinks and hairpins.

my vote goes for medium speed corners.....i love the feeling i get just before i come to my first brake marker.....select gear, get on the brake, see my line.......then comit like a mother!!! keep a steady roll on the gas in full tilt then a bit more gas and straighten her out and whack it open :cool ....
slow speed corners are ok, but my latest bike is a bit porky for flicking around..still like 'em, just not my favorite
hi speed corners are great, but i haven't been on a track in about 9 years and i have alot more to loose now if i go down at 120-150mph so the confidence isn't quite like it used to be.....i'll have to work on that;)

I like the slower ones (usually posted around 20 MPH) because you don't need 100 MPH to get a good lean angle and if you do run off the road, you're usually going less than 60.

I did? :confused Wow, must have scrambled my brains so bad I forgot...:laughing

RobertR1, I've noticed that you seem to be asking questions conductive to qood riding. Are you going to join us on a BARF trackday soon? Hope to see you out there! :thumbup

The old Turn 11 I did in 3rd. The new one, I think I do in 2nd.

I take 25mile turns at around 50+ so I guess that is considered slow turns, I enjoy feeling the tires slide a little. Medium turns are fun as well.

I know I will have fun at the track when I finally can afford it.
