Hey So Cal riders!

I'm leading a group of 5 Bay Area guys on a scenic ride down to Camarillo We will be doing a day ride in the hills around Malibu this Saturday June 27. I've got some ideas on routes around that area, but wanted to get a little local input.

What are your route suggestions / don't miss roads in the Malibu Hills?

Thanks!

CJ

never take the 101 freeway.

from camarillo take lewis road towards ocean, just past cal state channel islands then left on potero. stay on it till you get to 23, turn onto mulholland.

mulholland should the the northen boundary. all the fun stuff is south of it. PCH is the southern boundary (no duh!) and your way back to camarillo.

criss cross encinal, latigo, piuma and down los flores, etc. etc.

Thanks for the tips, fast4d!

What's in Camarillo? A hotel is about it. Just a place to stay before we hit the twisties. Any restaurant recommendations Kornholio?

Keep those tips coming!

What kind of food are you looking for?

not much GOOD food in camarillo.

LURE fish house is good. just about everything else is average.

oxnard or thousand oaks have better eats.

mex: burrito factory (don't let the name fool you) on ventura rd next to runway of oxnard airport.

sushi: in walmart shopping center off rose in oxnard

chinese: sesame garden in cam or madarin bistro in newbury park

$$$: mastros thousand oask or malibu. nobu in malibu

good fish and chips place: ventura harbor andria's seafood market.

you guys riding 58 and 33 to get here, right?

Santa Cruz to Monterey via H1 - 43 miles / 64 min
Monterey to Big Sur via H1 - 28 miles / 49 min
Big Sur to Santa Margarita via H1/H46/101 - 112 miles / 154 min
Santa Margarita to McKittrick via H58 - 71 miles / 88 min
McKittrick to Ojai via H33 - 94 miles / 117 min

It's going to be a great ride!

We will probably head to Lure. It's close to the hotel and it will be nice to walk after being on a bike all day.

Good route info here. Make sure to hit the section of Mulholland HWY between the Rock Store and Kanan Rd. It is the infamous "Snake", nothing super special about it, but it's worth seeing if your in the area.

Go here for breakfast!! Great food, pretty staff and an outdoor patio right on the airport. It's a popular spot for avation people to fly into for a meal. All different kinds of planes/helo's will come and go all day long.

oh yeah, the waypoint cafe. food is good. cool place to hangout. especially on weekends. lots of aircraft traffic.

we were there one time in the patio area. old guy who looked like grampa munster rolls up in his polished P-51, hops out and heads for the restroom.

The Rock Store or Neptune's on a Saturday will be a clusterfuck. Get their early.

No offense to Camarillans (I grew up in Newbury Park, went to grammar school in Camarillo and high school in Oxnard) but it is...um...dull. I would stay in Ventura. Much more scenic, cute downtown...better food options.

Sounds like a fun trip either way!

NP 4 life! (or TO, close enough)

Check out neptune's net on county line and watch the surfers, then go up yerba buena rd to little sycamore canyon and then over to mulholland over to malibu creek, lots of nice views along the way

To be fair, I spent 12 years in Ventura, three in Manhattan Beach and then three in Camarillo. Ventura is my home AFAIC (and yes, much nicer) but I graduated from high school in Camarillo and it's certainly a nice place and grown up a ton since I left there in 1999. :dunno

Ventura was our first choice, but the hotels there are booked up. We'll be on a ride-sleep-ride-repeat cycle so I'm sure Camarillo will be fine. :thumbup
