Mandatory Roadside Motorcycle Stops

Correlation does not equal causation. If there's a highway with a whole bunch of police on it, it kind makes sense that I'll be riding slower.

I oppose the idea. I find that education by the police seems to fall short. The education I've received from officers tends to take a tone of condescension (and not simply when pulled over). That method doesn't work well with me......

In the last several months:

CALTRANS signs across California have had motorcycle safety messages displayed for several days in February and May

Police Departments in Manteca, Vacaville, Davis, Livermore, and San Jose CHP have all put on motorcycle safety awareness events

The Livermore PD motorcycle safety awareness trailer has been at 12 different events including Moto GP this last weekend

The CHP has produced and published several public safety announcements aimed at new riders and returning riders. these PSAs have been aired throughout the state but mostly in the southern California area due to their high number of motorcycle deaths.

Law enforcement has had everything to do with these education efforts.

people are trying to prevent darwin from taking his course. I think the issue should be corrected at the source. media, tv shows, negative reinforcement. dumbass goes and buys a sportbike cuz he seen it mad stunna on speed tv and the proceeds to wreck it doesn't need protection from himself, he needs protection from what he sees on tv and thinks is a good idea... buncha retards out there trying to pimp the m/c scene just becuz they bought a harley and saw Sons of Anarchy... well, you get my point.. so what if a few ganstas get dumb and rash themselves up.. one less retard i have to deal with while out enjoying my ride.. Motorcycle education needs to be put in there with high school and tacked onto drivers ed, so you're exposed to it. licensing needs to be tiered. and mtv needs to stop making rap videos w/ iced out gixxers and blinging turbo busa...

Am I the only one old enough to remember this was already being done in the sixties/seventies? The CHP had random roadside inspections and if you passed a windshield sticker was good for a year IIRC.

For whatever reasons, noise or potential revenue source,we cyclists are on the radar of the public and lawmakers. Telling them to eat shit, while comforting, ain`t gonna cut it. We can learn from other perceived "fringe" groups like gun owners that deal with kneejerk politics, and also listen to WHY this is being focused on m/c riders only.

the WHY is pretty simple. people are buying sportbikes and harleys (fwiw a harley bagger is cheaper than a goldwing nowadays) and going out and causing some bureaucrat's fatal motorcycle crash stats to go up... because they're not educating themselves properly. because its the individual's responsibility not the governments responsibility to ensure you receive the proper training. and we're not big on individual responsibility here... right? same reason as to why a million other things were done to ensure that you don't hurt yourself on a daily basis

Personally, if they are seriously that worried about motorcycle safety, then make getting an M1 more difficult - make MSF mandatory, and make it longer. Have a probationary period for an M1 just like you have for your C-class.

But leave the fully-fledged alone :thumbdown

From the presentation I sat in on by the New York State Patrol guy in charge of these efforts they have seen great success and have reduced the number of motorcycle collisions ocuurring on or near the freeways they have targeted.

Without knowing the overall motorcycle traffic density before and after this is kind of meaningless. The reduction in total collisions could be because there is reduction in motorcycle traffic.

Do I need to get a lawyer?:rolleyes:rolleyes

I'm all for this. But we should expand the scope of those pulled over for safety violations. Let's add bicyclists onto that list. They share the road too, and have been known to frequently snub traffic laws. Pull them all over to the side of the road to lecture them about safety, drinking and riding, proper tire inflation, and so on. Do it on 9 on a weekend. Or better yet, during Critical Mass.

While we're at it, let's also add pedestrians. Stop them on their lunch hour in the city to talk to them about safety, their drinking habits, proper crosswalk usage, and so on.

I'm sure both of those scenarios would go over with nary a complaint. :rolleyes

Are they going to pull cars over and tell them to watch out for motorcycles?

I remember when I first started driving, the CHP used to have safety checkpoints all the time. Wave cars in and inspect, then give you a color-coded sticker if you passed.

NHTSA is working on this too.... they have $2mil to put into a graduated licensing program. Tried to give CA $1 mil to start this kind of program... not even close to enough money for CA to get this kind of licensing program up and running.

Regarding graduated licenses, there are a lot of people who question the effectiveness of this kind of program. If you read the latest NHTSA Motorcycle Safety Fact Sheet, there is a statement in there regarding unlicensed riders being a causal or associated factor in a high percentage of fatal crashes. Now the questions is, if licensing is already an issue how will making it harder to get a license help?

Really a great idea, however, in 2008 motorcycle fatalities in the US reached a milestone, they passed peds & bikes.

Easy. Riding unlicensed? Bike is confiscated and crushed. Done.

OHHHHH Lord, or whatever diety you believe or don't believe in.... (politically correct version) knows that I am with you on this one.....:thumbup

But... how many more people will now decide to run from the cops because they don't have a license and then we get to look at all of those threads about how the cops should not chase a violation only.....

Trading one problem for another.... Big circle mess here....

Ok. 2008, fuel crisis, $4 gallon gas, idiots who had no business on 2 wheels riding.

How many more MC sales were there, and new riders. what % were under 1 year riding, unliscensed, ect?

Deaths were up in 2008 (and since 1997) but the main reason was more motorcycles and riders (see first attachment).

License status is often cited as a factor in crashes, but it's sometimes misunderstood (or misrepresented). Half of improperly licensed riders in fatal crashes aren't just lacking an M endorsement. Their drivers licenses are suspended, revoked, or non-existent. And notice that this is a declining problem, not one that's growing (second attachment).

But, if California's motorcycle riders continue to kill themselves at the rates they have over the last decade the legislature may work toward implementing stronger tactics in the name of motorcycle safety. .

Obama you and most EO's are going to see riders how you like it. No matter how wrong all of you are......

More riders = more accidents.

Happy hunting :thumbup

Those are PSA's nothing more than a "suggestion to the public". . Many don't listen either. I believe that money is not being used in the public's best interest.

Heck pass a simple written test, eye test and having strong pulse will almost get anyone an MC permit to ride.

Then PSA's will make it all better? :|

I'm on my own out there officer. John Q Public will run me down, kill me and then mortage his house and pay the devil. Then he'll lie, cheat and do everything he can to keep his sorry ass out of jail. While I'l pushing up daisies. PSA's indeed. :x

There's no such thing as a "quick-fix", so you won't ever be satisfied.
PSA's do make a difference.
But if you can't see it, then I suppose it isn't there. :dunno

:laughing Who's asking for a quick fix? I've been M1 licensed since 1982 and that's my opinion of "John Q driving Public" current state of enforcement and PSA's.

Find another cage to rattle or maybe a beer and a shot. :party
