Martial Arts

ideaz said:
Have you guys noticed that knowing some sort of martial art makes you feel safer when you get into those scary situation. The kind of thinking that says " man... looks like like trouble, but I think I can kick ass if needed" ;)
No, that's why I lift weights :teeth

But seriously, studying karate has taught me more than anything to avoid those kinds of situations. I know I can probably drop somebody who outweighs me. But if he has a knife or something, I also know I'm going to get cut doing so. My pretty face ain't worth it! :p

Steve

Yeah I read up on your art a few years back on a MA rag. I have heard that there has been some controversies, but as a cross-trained art it can stand up for itself.

I hope this helps but in the practice of Kali the point is when you get into a knief fight expect to get cut, but how deep and where is what you train for.

It sucks that the politics type bullshit has come in to play so much. You would think a bunch of adults could behave like...well, adults.

My Sifu doesn't get into the politics. It's one of the reasons I like him so much. He doesn't say one method is better than another. He thinks each method is a little different than the other and we could learn from all of them.

Sifu has been learning Aikedo now and has even incorporated it some into what we do. I enjoy that what we do is not rigid and is constantly growing and chaging based on what we learn from experience and others.

That's true of any martial art I should think. Well, except maybe Jeet Kune Do, Bruce was always getting cut up. :p

I might of worded my previously statement a bit wrong. All i was trying to say is that I feel more secure when those situtations that im not able to avoid come up

I agree about diffusing the situation and only using the art if it a last resort

I'm book learned in first year wushu.

I lift weights for confidence and general gravity fighting.

For self defense, I use my noggin' and avoid as many hostiles as possible.

I like WWF fighting :)

I took Taekwondo for about 6 months and then decided to switch to Jiujitsu and i've been doing that for the last 8 months and im really enjoying it, still a white belt though.

1. What kind do you study?
Another Shotokan kid here. I spent an equal amount of time learning Kenpo and some Brz Jui-Jitsu. Also some Muay Thai and American Boxing.

2. What degree/belt/rank are you?
Ummm - Black in one and the others just taught me to hurt people (3-5 years)....

3. Why do you do it?/ What do you get out of it?
I started because I was a very angry young man. I wanted to learn to KICK ASS! What I got was a good dose of humilty, a few broken bones, and the knowledge that I'll probably walk away from a confrontation. The trouble will find you and it's best to just walk away...

4. Name of school
That's like asking where did you learn to ride! I studied at any place that would let me in. All over the Bay Area - lots of good teachers you just gotta look for them and offer your pain and suffering to them :teeth

I find it funny that the most bad ass guys I've trained with are the most humble and kind people you could meet. It's the loud mouth assholes that say they're gonna kick you ass that don't know shit....

I'm with R6Chick - there's so much to learn from the other martial arts that to debate which one's better is like arguing on the internet :D

And I compete in powerlifting (3rd in CA last year) and strength does matter - hit the gym! Your bike and BF/GF will thank you

I agree, martial arts are not intended to kill, but to protect you from harm.

Most "street" fights will break down into a brawl after the first couple of strikes. So you usually only get "one" good "true to form" strike in, and that should usually do it. then run like hell. :teeth

Also when confronted with a gun or knife, go for the kill and know that you will often get shot or stabbed. Strike very fast and very immediately, don't let the opponent size you up.

Schools.
blah to many schools i went to lol

many to list but "retired" :p but for my Kaju brothers and sisters here I respectfully give the Kajukenbo hand salute and a little background.

1st degree, Wong's Kajukenbo (no longer part of the system currently). but our dojo was the first Kaju dojo in SF. Mr. Wong was early student of Joe Halbuna, who emmigrated from Hawaii and obviously, student of Adriano Emerado.

my cha obi was awarded by Tom Barros (now Mitose) at his DC dojo, the "sister dojo" to ours. back then he was Kajukenbo and was Sensei Barros. this, is very old school and our dojos would travel CA together.

so much to talk about. I hope we get the chance someday!

kumusta to the Inayan Escrima folks too. I was lucky to take a seminar with Mike before he passed away. my training partner was none other than Rick Alemany, an Uncle of sorts. when I move back home I will look him up again. it was a sad when Remy passed on as well. And Alex. oh man this is starting to hurt again.

best of training to you all.

Kajukembo (Grand Master Emile Bautista) Vallejo, CA Brown Belt

Shotokan Karate (Lozada Family, Sijo Reynard Lozada and Sifu Paul Lozada) which included Escrima from the late Angel Cabales. Black Belt

I also studied Escrima for a short time with Guru Jeff Finder.

Nowadays, I just carry a Gee-Lock .40 cal. or a Sig Sauer .45 cal. inside of a Galco leather holster to fight crime with.

My mouth does the rest of the work...

Heeeeeyaaaaaaaa! :cool

JAPANESE STYLE SUCKS!!!!!:twofinger
Kung Fu owns you all...Haha j/k. All styles are cool. Some maybe crappier than others i.e. wushu:p. J/k. Some styles make you stiff later on in life. Like wushu very few ppl over their 30's practice the style religiously because its hard on the joints. The style is movie kung fu. Most of the moves they perform are not applicable in real life. For instance their kicks in the air and landing in the splits. If they do it on concrete say good bye to your nuts.

Nice to know that there are other practicitianers out here. I do feel more safe know that I have some skill to protect myself, family, friends, and anybody who needs help. I do cause it is fun as some of you stated but also I do it for the short, and long term benefits. The long terms are what I am looking for in a style such as power, balance, control, speed, etc.

My only dislike is how standardize everything is.:mad I hate because people will hide behind their belt or pull rank in a class to some noob who just joined. There is one guy in my class who does this. He just recently join like 3-4 months ago. He is thinks that since he knows a set higher than another he is capable teaching people. I been there for a year and a 2 months and I'm still a newb. I don't teach people until Sifu tells me to help them or when they ask me a question on a move. It not that I don't like him teaching he just teaches or corrects them incorrectly. :mad Which may result in them getting hurts when trying to impliment a move that they learned incorrectly. I hate it when people think that they are better because they are given a colored belt higher.

Anyway before i keep on ranting :rant all day long about martial arts. I just wanna say a couple things that all students should think about. In real life it is not who has a higher belt that wins a fight it is who has more skill and experience. Martials Arts is used for self defense . You are not there to start a fight you just have to end. Or thats is how I am thought :angel. Remember there is always someone better than you out there.
Funny thing is that I just got back from Kung Fu and I stumbled into this thread. Best thread ever!:thumbup

Oh does anybody do any internal work?

-Edit-
Wing Chung is tight. Yes even though it was founded by a woman. :laughing Please don't beat me up.:)
