Master Link Question

Yeah, they fucked up.

In fairness, I have very high standards for my motorcycle, but I also have an aversion to replacing the cases on my motorcycle because someone can't be bothered to install a master link correctly.

I guess I am lucky I caught it right away.

They are not admitting they messed up, but are going to replace the master link. I am going to get down on the ground at the shop and make sure that all four o-rings are there before I ride it home.

If you can't be bothered with the wait. You can tell them the local CG has a whole box of master links (including D.I.D. ones) Have them pick you up one, and you go back there and get your bike fixed.

They can't get to it until tomorrow and I work Friday and Saturday. My first weekday off won't be until next Wednesday - which is when it's scheduled to be fixed. I can wait until then, as long as it gets fixed correctly.

Ahh, right, you own multiple bikes. :thumbup

Sorry, stuck in "Only own one bike" mode at the moment. :laughing

Either way, this sort of stuff is BS, and certainly not something where if I were managing a shop, I'd say "go ahead and ride on it until we get to it next week". Chains get a lot of abuse.

The only day I could ride it other than today - is Sunday, and I will be busy all day with my son at his school track meet - the county finals. The next time I could ride will be Wednesday, and I told them that.

Yeah, they fucked up. Sounds like they're not handling it well, AND there is no fucking way I'd ride on a chain that's missing an o-ring. They should be handling it today. Sounds like the tech manhandled the chain, ripped the o-ring, and is now trying to cover for it. They should have had you ride it back, pulled the old masterlink, and installed a new one. It takes all of 10 minutes to do the job if you're not a moron or it's not your first time. I'm not a dealership tech, missing some of the tools that would make it easier, and installing one with a c-clamp, vice grips, and a punch would only take me 5 minutes.

Everyone makes mistakes but they're doing a shit job of handling this. Not to mention that riding around with no grease in the chain (because there's nothing to keep it in now that the oring is gone) is going to cause some serious wear on that link of the chain. I wouldn't want that on a brand new chain. Nothing they've done so far is acceptable, IMO.

Exactly :thumbup

Thanks for the link.

After searching I stumbled across a thread where a rider really put a lot of thought and effort into installing his chain - if only my shop was as thorough.

If your shop was that through, it'd take them all day to replace one chain! That dude is the quintessential BMW rider. :laughing

Interestingly, my last master link came with a couple of plates to put in between the links so that it was impossible to squish the o-rings or overtighten the master. Those little beauties live in the rollaway now, next to the rest of the chain tools. Even if they're a bit off for a different brand of chain, I suspect they'll be used as an extra bit of insurance. :thumbup

Ahh, ok, that's not so bad then. Hopefully they'll do the right thing. :thumbup

After much thought, I think the o-ring might have fallen off when the outside plate was applied and pressed and the tech didn't notice. They were busy and he probably did this a thousand times before and thought - Good!

All I want is for this to be redone correctly and all will be forgiven. I think I'm being cool about it.

Update: The master link on my chain was reinstalled today. There was an issue that they repaired and now everything is hunky dory. It was a bit of a drag that it was raining today - but it wasn't all that hard of a rain and kind of fun riding in it. I am happy that they took care if it and will remain a customer.

Good conclusion. Ride safe!

Glad to hear it all worked out :thumbup

WTF?

Make them fix it, then buy a chain breaker kit and learn to do it yourself.Personally, I think they don't know what they are doing and , worse, lied to you repeatedly about it. I'd think seriously about finding someone, ANYONE else to work on it.:(
