Well, I watched Masters of the Universe this evening as it was released on Prime today and it was wonderful.

This film was the absolute train-wreck, utterly absurd love letter to Generation X kids that we all so desperately wanted that terrible disappointment in 1987 to be. The related cameo by Dolph Lundgren was a stroke of genius, but even more deeply entrenches this film as a must have for boys who were living their best life during the golden age of Saturday Morning cartoons and going to elementary school in the 1980's.

I can also see why it flopped so disastrously hard at the box office. The target audience I think is far too narrow. If you didn't have the joy of battling Ram Man against Trap Jaw while you and all of your friends were jealous of that one kid in teh neighborhood who had an actual Castle Greyskull playset, this film is probably gobbeldygook to you.

It does a good job trying to be funny, and its self aware comedy might make it enjoyable for some who are not The Kids In America, but those not in the aforementioned target audience will probably miss like half of the stuff that was written into the film and just have to be content to enjoy the constant CGI stream.
 
On the prime list, as an OG hoping to miss only half it’s charms.
 
My oldest son will love it. He was all into it as a punk.

More a Speed Racer/Looney Tunes/Star Blazers guy. Missed out on MoU, GI Joe, Transformers. (Though I did have one of the original GI Joes.)
 
I am center of mass for that target audience. I will definitely watch it the next time I fire up Prime,....which will be sometime in the next year.

Johnny Quest for me. I appreciated Looney Tunes and Speed Racer, but I had to watch Johnny, Race, Hadji, Bandit and Dr. Quest!!
 
I liked the movie. I was never really into He-Man so there was no concern of the movie messing with any childhood memories or thoughts of doing the show a disservice.
 
I liked it as well and don't remember anything other then he man rode a lion? and had a huge sword

The massive problem with the movie is this: Skeletor's voice. His voice is wayyyy too low and not high pitched like Skeletor. I submit my expectation below:

Yeah, the 70's kids of X won't grok it. I really see the deep joy in the film to appeal of those in the your mentioned Golden Age of Cartoons, which was the GI Joe, Transformers, He-Man, Mask, Thundercats, etc type era, when Corporations really fully understood the cash value of marketing hard directly to children and doubled down on the investment.

This was entertaining for me as a person who fit perfectly in that era, but honestly, I don't know what the rewatch value is, as I imagine the nostalgia appeal becomes very limited after my first watch.

The lesson from Orko at the end was fucking gold though.

Funny part, I recall, also during that era, seeing Robotech for the first time.

I had seen glimpses of the GI Joes et al, enough to know it wasn't really engaging for me.

But then I saw an episode of Robotech where they, I guess, blew up a space station or something,

And I was like "O.O They KILL people on this show!" That Did Not Happen in the contemporary US shows (for good reason).

I recall a GI Joe scene where a helicopter thing was hit by a missile and exploded, only to see the pilot sput out and dangling from a parachute.

That was the way of it.

Yeah, that was teh same ERA where the A-Team wasn't allowed to kill anybody on their show, the FCC was HEAVILY regulating violence of any kind back then. As much as I love the GI Joe toys when I was little for the accuracy of the small arms and MOS details provided, when I watched it, I was always so upset, even in grade school, that they often would show battlefield action at scale between the Joe's and Cobra, who would close distance amid laser rifle blasts, and then as no one went down, would then begin punching each other.

As a 3rd grader, I thought that was a very irresponsible representation of the risk of firearms to show people. :laughing
 
I mean, we bought the GIjoe toys, watched Red Dawn, Rambo, and Commando and played with them....the cartoon was always secondary and it sucked. They ALWAYS ejected!
 
All this is a blast from the past. Anyone remember Blackstar and how can ya'll forget Voltron? Saw that He-Man was on Prime and might stream it up this weekend as a way to kill time
