Michael Phelps 8th gold of the games
Cheering from the pool deck, Michael Phelps won his record eighth gold medal of the Beijing Games on Sunday to become the grandest of Olympic champions.

Jason Lezak held on to the lead Phelps gave him, anchoring the United States to a world record in the 400-meter medley relay against an Australian team that did its best to spoil history.

But Phelps, with a big hand from three teammates, would not be denied. He eclipsed Mark Spitz's seven-gold performance at the 1972 Munich Games, an iconic performance that was surpassed by a swimmer fitting of this generation: a 23-year-old from Baltimore who loves hip-hop music, texting with his buddies and wearing his cap backward.
Man, I never thought the Mark Spitz record would ever get broken, but this kid is something else! :wow

You see the NBC profile on this guy? He is a genetic mutation made exclusively for swimming! :laughing Seriously...they said the following:

Stands 6'4"
Has the torso of a person 6'8"
has the legs of a person 6'0
has broad shoulders to a thin waste
double jointed shoulders and elbows provide a more efficient stroke
size 14 feet
hands the size of a dinner plate
the wingspan of an albatrose
a heart that pump 8 gallons of blood per minute!!! :wtf

The guy is literally a human torpedo.

He is breaking World Records by seconds. His team relay WR was what? 8 seconds faster than ever before!!!!

Incredible stuff

Did you catch the part about how much fucking food the guy eats?

Ridiculous. 12 thousand calories per day.

Here's the copy/paste from a BBC article on what he's been eating:

Breakfast: Three fried egg sandwiches; cheese; tomatoes; lettuce; fried onions; mayonnaise; three chocolate-chip pancakes; five-egg omelette; three sugar-coated slices of French toast; bowl of grits; two cups of coffee
Lunch: Half-kilogram (one pound) of enriched pasta; two large ham and cheese sandwiches with mayonnaise on white bread; energy drinks
Dinner: Half-kilogram of pasta, with carbonara sauce; large pizza; energy drinks

my family and i were just discussing that.

he also sleeps 12 hours a day, and eats from 15,000 to 20,000 calories a day.
breakfast something like; 6 egg omlette, 2 sandwhiches and a lot of oj
lunch .. a lot
and dinner an entire pizza

he said all he does while training for the olympics is eat, sleep and swim.. that's it. total discipline. he has the body for it and also the mind. a lot of other folks out there i'm sure do other things during their day, even though they prepare to compete.

crazy

Yeah...saw that too. They said that each of his workouts burns 4,000 calories! Man...I'm lucky to burn 30 on any given day! :laughing

He burns more calories sitting down and doing nothing than most of us do when we actually exercise. :|

i hope not in the pool!

I wish I could eat 12 thousand calories a day... and not die. I'm going at a 4k calorie\day right now, and my normal burn rate is around 3.5k - 4.5k\day. I cannot even begin to imagine eating 12k calories a day, let alone burning that.

speaking of spoilers, this whole tape delay thing sucks. i tried not to look at the headlines on my homepage, but every now and then something would catch my eye and i'd know what happened. every phelps race, the women's gymnastics, the 100m dash, men's basketball. i would have preferred they show it live so i could put it on the dvr and watch it later. :x

anyway, as for phelps, kind of a bitch move by that serbian guy (from anaheim :rolleyes) not just protesting his loss but still suggesting he actually won. you lost, dude, get over it. :thumbdown

Ya Phelps set the fucking bar way up there now and hes still going to the next summer olympics too. Hats off to him for the 8 medals.

That diet is crazy, I can't see how you can have an appetite to want to eat all that shit.

theres a lil story on him in Pop. Sci/Mechs...

he kills 1000 cal in/less then an hour...his arm length from tip of both fingers is longer then his body, he creates less acid thingy(lactic acid?) that makes him tried after training, and he trains 4 hours in the water and 1 on land...

Phelps gets all his inspiration and drive from the 08 Ninja 250. Those 8 medals? No coincidence.

Mad skills, but also a little bit of luck.

Good shit for sure. Glad it's an American doing this than some other country.. :)
