Avoid both?

Mini has electrical problems. Bugs do too. I spent a lot of time on the threads for Mini and they are not the most reliable from what is posted (but isn't entirely representative). The bugs...well....there's a reason you don't seem them on the road.

Have you considered a Smart car or a Yugo?

Actually the Mini looks half interesting but why would a Beetle be on your list.

Probably cuz it's more reliable (gasp) than a Mini. :laughing

Srsly, I would be very reluctant to pay money for a Mini. Or a VW, but especially a Mini.

Look up head coking and get back to me. :twofinger

Maybe he needs 4 doors or a back seat? I've heard nothing but bad things concerning the Mini. But do your own research on these (clown) cars.

humm.....kind of what i thought. need a 2nd car for wife, she wants conv. & i want to spend 5k. needs to seat 4

Had a mini for a few years as a commuter car. Put about 60,000 on it. Never gave me any problems and was super fun to drive. However it ate tires and resale was pathetic. I don't know anything about the bugs.

Appearance has come a long way since we called the original one a lunchbox

at 5k there are still some good and interesting options. I think you can get a 9-3 convertible in that range. They aren't fast and only cool to a certain type of person, but they are extremely safe and have some interesting quirks.

Don't buy a mini. You'll hate yourself and your wallet will hate you too.
