Monster Ride home!

I passed some small little towns, I think it was Coaldale in Nv, and took the above ^^ photo of that little house. Was pretty tiny town, and then on to Tonopah, Nv.

The last 40 miles, were kinda boring and straight, but hell, was just making tracks.

Arrived Tonopah, Nv. about 5pm. and stopped at a notell motel that I've stayed at before while driving through and got a cheap room.

I had considered continuing the ride east, but figured, a nice stop, walk around and a good dinner was the way to go. No plan, remember. Besides, there isn't any towns east on my route for another 150 miles or so. :laughing

I rolled through town, and noticed they had a tiny farmers market going on. Figured, why not? Go check it out, this is America, the small towns, the regular folks going about their business and doing what they can to survive.

Stopped and took some photos, had a hot dog, and then went up to the gentleman by the van in the above photos. He was selling cheesecakes and home made fudge. And he was pretty much blind. :wtf He offered some cheesecake, and then puts his hands on the table, feeling about and then leans way over to the table to see if the cake is there. :laughing nice older gentleman. I realized, shit, this guy is blind.

I bought a plate of fudge, and gave him a $5 bill and he gave me 2 dollars back and then held up a handfull of change, and said "take 50 cents from here" :)

it was refreshing to see honest people and know that it still exists is all.

also, you could come out and meet your local barber..as there is only one. :laughing

Some photos as I walked about town and some murals that were up on the hotels.

I don't know what that statue above ^^ is all about, with the lady's hand on the guys leg, and turning away from him. but I thought it was funny.

Another statue that is up, and in front of the Post Office is a little more somber, and is in recognition of "Big Bill" who was the elevator operator in the mine, when the great mine fire of 1911 ocurred. "Big" Bill Murphy went down into the mine one last time to bring up survivors from the Tonopah Belmont mine fire on February 11, 1911. God took seventeen souls into his fold that day. One of them was "Big" Bill."

This restaurant advertised the "best steak in town, any town" so I just had to try it. It was damned good.

Took a few photos of the mural depicting that somber day in 1911 and the history of Tonopah, Nv. Which is also "home" to the stealth bomber, but keep that hush hush. :laughing

3 wheeler dude rolled up to this bar for a few drinks.
a bike that was parked next to me the following day, had those gatlin gun exhaust tips. :laughing I just wanted to see them spin. I thought they were cool. meh.

Day 2 was chilly so I geared up with everything warm I had.
Here is what I packed for this trip:
1 pair long johns
1 set rain gear
1 jeans (wearing them) :teeth
2 t-shirts (i can buy more on the road)
This is where I splurge: 5 chones, and 5 pairs of socks :laughing
winter gloves, summer gloves and very cold weather gloves.
camera, clear visor, ipod, chargers, paperwork, and underarmour shirt.

1 tank bag, and the rest of the stuff in my messenger bag on me.
:)

breakfast would now consist of water, red bull, and coffee drink. :laughing I don't eat much during the day when I'm riding long distance...matter of fact, I don't eat at all, till dinner usually.

The temps got warm pretty quickly once the sun was beating on me. Rode out on Hwy 6 to Warm Springs, and then turned south onto the "extraterrestrial hwy" and took a pic of the sign at the crossroads. hmmm...no gas for another 111 miles. and I'm already 50+ miles into this tank. It should make it. :teeth

I think the pic with the alien statue is where they keep alien bodies, must be. What better place than right in front of everyones eyes, right?

Got into Utah that morning and set my sites on squiggly lines on the map, planning for a northeastern run to get into Colorado.

Some photos while riding with my small camera.

Long shadows. Once I got off the ET hwy, I went through Hiko, Nv. through Caliente, and to the town of Panaca, Nv. and then east on Hwy 319 into Utah.

I always see bikes on trailers, and wonder why the person isn't riding it. Maybe they're just moving or something, but I generally feel sorry for the bike. :laughing

The leaves are turning up in the mountains, and I went past Cedar City, Ut on hwy 14, then east on Hwy 12.

Wound my way up north through the back roads of Utah through the Capital Reef N.P., east on hwy 24 to Hanksville, and finally north through desert style terrain (the change from forests and mountains to deserts was pretty cool)

I was hoping to make it to Arches N.P. by sundown for some cool pics, but I got held up with lots of photos and stops along the way.

Through Cedar City, I got turned around and went down the wrong street, saw this memorial to the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars.

The other photos are climbing up through Bryce Canyon N.P. area. Snow on the ground at the top. pretty cool.

Rode north, and by late evening, it was just some long stretches of road, trying to get to I-70 so I could go east to Grand Junction Colorado. I was trying to stay out of big towns, and stick to small towns and local motels, but wouldn't happen today.

Saw these bmw guys riding, but they didn't wave. :( :laughing

Then got into Colorado at night, and stopped in grand junction, Co. for the night, and got me some chicken fried steak at the hotel/restaurant that I found.

That was after I stopped a couple times to get a room, and they had "no vacancy" :( It all worked out.

Day 3. Early rising, as I couldn't sleep anymore. packed up my stuff, and warmed up the bike.
It was COLD out of Grand Junction, Co.

So I rode south on Hwy 50 for about 45 miles to Delta, Co. and pulled into this diner for some bfast to warm up. "Starvin Marvins" :laughing had to stop at that point. Had the bfast special 4.50 for eggs, bacon, toast and coffee. warmed up, I kept going.

it was still pretty early, and I stopped to take photos of the fog down in the valleys off the hwy as I went into Montrose, Co.

after the small bfast, I decided to continue on, and I continued on hwy 50 going east. Through Gunnison, Co. and eventually over Monarch Pass and the great divide. These were some really cool roads. Very little traffic and I got to kick it up a notch and take the roads at a good pace.

So much fun. And pretty much all of Colorado that I got to ride through was this way. :)

Seeing as how today was a short mileage day, I had talked to a buddy of mine and we would hang out in Manitou Springs where he lives, and I'd crash there for the night. Go drinking and see a Led Zeppelin cover band "no quarter" :laughing

Leaves were turning everywhere...mostly yellows, and a bit of orange. But still cool to see a change of seasons.

My buddy wouldn't get out of work till about 5pm, so he suggested I stop for a slice of Pizza in Salida, Co. for some damn good pizza. Well, I arrived right at 11am there, so stopped and got a slice, and happy to see they sell PBR all the time at 2 bucks. :teeth

after Salida, I hit some construction traffic and had to wait about 20 minutes sitting in on the road. It was warm by this time.

Then on my last leg into Canon City, I saw this truck with some dogs in it, so when I got close to it, they both turned around and sat there and watched me the whole time. :laughing took a photo of them, and when I passed the lady she was laughing at them too. Cause they just followed me around the truck.

Up near Canon City, I think, my buddy told me about this road to take called "Skyline road" and it was just a one way bypass off Hwy 50 and would drop you off on the other side of this hill onto the road I needed to go on.

It was pretty cool, and it's a bit surreal, when you ride it and you can see the ledge and precipice down both sides a few feet from you as you ride.

Pretty cool shit.

and there was the biggest, dirt bike park I have seen in my life. about 2 miles worth of hills, trails all along the side of this hill.

So my friend John, is an ultra runner, you know...the idiots that do 50 milers and 100 mile runs and he trains like an animal. Pretty cool shit. He was talking about how they run the pikes peak trail to the top and said it's only a few miles from his place. Rearry?! So I made it into Manitou Springs about 3 hours early, and decided, why the hell not. Lets go to the top.

From the ranger toll station it's 19 miles to the top, 11 of those are paved, 8 of those are not paved. :teeth

I made it up in 35 minutes. The guy said it would take me an hour. The record in a specially constructed vehicle at the Pikes Peak Race to the Clouds is 10 min 17 seconds. And I believe that the current motorcycle record at the Pikes Peak challenge is held by a Ducati Hypermotard (edit: I was corrected and told it was in it's class, only). :teeth

The song "American the Beautiful" was penned at the top of Pikes Peak, there are some photos of the plaques. And it truly is amazing to see the views from here.

Some harleys that had made it up to the top.
14,110 ft elevation, pretty cool. a little short of breath when I was rolling the bike around for my photos. :laughing

Hung out at the top for a while, and it's refreshing to see the country and all of it's great spots.

Rode down, gingerly..:laughing and then wicked it up on the paved area. Came around a corner, off a hard lean and straightened it up to the sight of a park ranger, flipping his lights on, and I'm like.."SHIT!" :laughing and then he just made a hand gesture to slow down. Gave him the nod and thumbs up, and chilled the rest of the way down. :teeth

Arrived to my buddies house, and he wasn't home, but said his door was open and there was PBR in the fridge. So I chilled out with beer till he arrived. :)

the photo with the Lake in it is where the damn is, you can kind of make it out. I took a photo of Pikes peak from down there (which is the 3rd photo on this post) pretty cool.
