Monterey Historics

Canapa has a couple of these in Scotts Valley

i went to a cars-n-coffee there a few years ago and much of the facility was open to walk through. i think it was a few weeks before monterey car circus week. there was aLOT of eye candy and various porsche race hardware strewn about... not really strewn but it was everywhere as cars were being prepped for the historics. there was a 917 engine on a pallet ready to be reinstalled just sitting there. i could have touched it, no ropes no "you touch you die" signs. no way i'd trust a bunch of strangers with coffee and donuts in their hands around that to not try using one of the velocity stacks as a cup holder.

Who was at fault there?

Was the owner expected to leave it in neutral because it was expected that it would be started up, or was the judge at fault for trying to start it without ensuring it was in neutral?

duno about you but i expect every parked manual transmission to be left in gear as i was taught. like FINE-C or whatever it is these days for starting a motorcycle. do the checklist.

i would imagine that entering the show has some lawyer language in there that indemnifies the judges and the event itself.

That was my first impression, I always left my manual shift cars in gear, I just don't know what the expectations were for a show like that, sometimes there are rules or expectations. Still, I would personally check to make sure it was out of gear before starting it, just like when I'm going to inspect the barrel of a gun.
