More on brain damage to ex NFL players

If I was a parent, I would never let my kid play football, unless I didn't like him.

Complete over reaction. The chances if your kid getting beyond high school football is statistically unlikely. This is just the flavor of the day shit normal people get scared about. There might very well be a danger to NFL players, but that's a very different thing than kids playing football.

Your kid is much more likely to become a junky than brain damaged from playing football. How many of you hand wringers know a dope head from high school versus a guy with TBI from playing football? I never did drugs, but know loads of druggies/former druggies and not one with TBI. That doesn't mean it didn't happen, but please, there are so many other things to worry about as a parent.

Ive just never heard you mention football so im surprised youre interested in it. My point was that youre ok with some brain issues in mma or boxing. But just because its less than football that makes it an ok level? Why? I actually agree with you that football is probably more damaging. Athletic commisions really arent going to do anything to stop a fighter from having long term brain issues. They are looking to make sure boxers or mma fighters dont have an immediate issue. But aside from that, these fighters know the risks and choose to fight. You choose not to. Why do we need to make decisions for athletes? Give them the info and let them decide if its a risk they want to take. I dont need to see football change. Its a voluntary league.

I wS thinking the same thing. There really is no level of head trauma that's "okay". But I do love football and enjoy a good fight as well.

I would let him/her play. Even though I know the risks. More than likely they won't develop a passion for the game. And even if they do the chances of them playing beyond HS are slim. There are benefits to playing football and all team sports that aren't easily obtained elsewhere. The value of those benefits outweighs the risks involved IMO.

I never said I wanted to outlaw it or anything. I actually think the game will change due to self regulation, like you're seeing happen now

It's how you know it's fun. Anything that can't hurt you is probably lame.

I will disagree with you on that. There is plenty of things that are fun to do with pretty low risk of injury. I haven't scuba dived or skydived in many years
but there are other things to do more fun then watching sports, IMO.
For example, I love;
Shooting Sports
Card games
A good romp in the sack with my Lady

I dont like whats happening now haha. Short kickoffs are lame :laughing

+1

Team sports are better than individual sports IMO, for developing interpersonal and organizational skills. I'd let my kid play after age 10, when their brain's physical structure has had the chance to develop a bit more. As far as HS goes, odds are they'd drop football in favor of other interests anyway.

Never forget Lyle Alzado. I don't think it was the steroids but the concussions that gave him that horrible cancer.

Realistically there's no safe level of playing football. A kid is just as likely to get a concussion in high school football. If anything it's potentially worse since his brain is in full growing mode.

At least this year they are starting to crack down on these hits and trying to improve safety.

Should they remove tackling from football?

latest

John Madded doesn't think that kids should be playing tackle football until they get to High School.

The stories that I hear from talking to people who have been involved in football for decades is that those little league kids who are stars in tackle football when they are 9, 10, 11 are not stars in High School because their bodies are too beaten up from their early years of playing.

I just wanted to say the nfl has been taking a more direct approach on bad late hits etc.

Its way different then say 10 years ago.

Same with basketball, and surprisingly all the players agree. Those thinking the nfl isnt trying or creating new rules to prevent hits on defenseless ppl your totally wrong

Tom Brady's dad said the same thing

From experience I can tell you youth football, like pewee and junior midgets, is more about the coaches than the players. There's a LOT of glory days things happening in footba youth coaching. It's crazy, but not really. Football as s hobby basically has no outlet after high school for people. You can't pursue it as a lifelong hobby like so many other sports. Shit it's not even playable for the average person over 25.

There's a reason football coaching is full of people with no kids or relatives on the team at the youth levels

Thanks for your post, Roger Goddell :teeth

NFL has been pulled yelling and screaming to enact policies to help protect the players.

I've had 6 or 8 and some of you Barfers have met me so what was the topic again?
