I just moved into an apartment in Westwood, and I was given a choice of parking spots. This first choice was on the ground level of the garage, where my bike would be in plain site to street traffic and passers by. The other choice (which I opted for) was two levels under ground where you'd have to corkscrew down to find my bike. I chose the bottom level because the building manager told me the ceiling clearance is low (about 8 ft), which would make it difficult for anyone to pickup the bike and put it in a truck. I've seen a video of people picking up a bike and putting it in a van, but I don't think a van could fit in the lower levels. However, I'm afraid that if no one can see the bike, then thieves can take their sweet time stealing my bike, which would give them more incentive to do so. So what is the most common way of stealing a motorcycle? What else would you recommend to keep my bike from getting stolen? I was thinking disc brake lock, but I'm not too sure.

I've spent a lot of time thinking about this. I'm kind of attached to it my bike. To the point were I got into an argument with a girl I was dating about her parking habits near my bike. She made me choose between her and the bike. :twofinger

Insure it. You're fucked either way. Above ground it'll take them a couple seconds to lift it into a van in plain sight, below ground they'll have all the time they need to defeat your security.

You could try doing some GPS tracking shit on it with a cheap phone if you wanted, but i'd just insure it for theft and call it good.

Good point...

Oooooh, there's a good poll question. "Your SO says it's me or the bike, what do you do?"

:laughing

"Bike was here before you, and it'll be here after."

:laughing

Except that my fiancee knew me before I started riding...although she was the one that helped me get into it, so it's all her fault anyways. :laughing

Edit: Morad, sorry to be a downer about the whole thing. But the only way to be sure is to insure it. Anything else is defeatable.

Get the parking spot at the bottom level then chain the bike to a pillar or something. Then, put some dents on the tank for good measure. Most thieves will probably go looking for a better looking, easier to steal bike.

Is it too late to add a poll? This chick was nuts. She couldn't make our first date, because she got drunk the night before and crashed her car. That should have been a red flag right there.

You're realism is sobering and much appreciated. If they can get it regardless, then I'm going to make them work for it. :teeth

Create another thread, this one has the wrong title anyway.

Ok, I just moved here and all I see everyday are bikes parked in front of peoples houses, next to the curb with the front wheel pointed towards the street. Like it's saying "Come take me".

Solution:
Get a pay as you go phone. Give that number to her, and only to her.
Get a hotel for the night. Say your house got crashed into by some drunk chick last night.
Date, enjoy the insanity that comes from dating a crazy chick, when you're done, toss the phone into a fucking river.

If you're really that worried about it, get a paging alarm for it. That way you will be paged if someone moves it. I have one on one of my motorcycles and it really works. Just don't tell your riding buddy's or they will slip out of the burger joint on your next ride and bump it so your pager goes off. After a month that joke wears off. Don't ask me how I know.

I didn't know those existed. So if someone is doing something to my bike, I'll know. Then I can go down, and threaten to differentiate them, and because they're a constant, differentiating them will make them vanish. :nerd Are thieves usually afraid of nerdy lookin' dudes who wear pi shirts? This means I'd have to buy a gun or learn to fight...

Is there a model you recommend?

You are wise to be worried about potential theft.

It seems many of the thefts reported here on BARF are from gated and secure (cough) shared condo/apt parking lots.

You can use a super heavy duty chain looped around a gas pipe or concrete pillar. Serious locks can slow down thieves but with enough 'private' time any lock can be defeated by serious thieves.

Sadly when parking a nice bling motorcycle in shared public spaces it seems full comprehensive insurance and LoJack might be the only way to sleep easy at night.

This (to front wheel),

this (to rear disc brake),

this (with NRA stickers or patches),

this (to lock your cover),

and this.

Note: Camera doesn't have to be real.

Best case scenario:

You still have a front wheel...but no motorcycle.

Worst case scenario: You discover the bike is gone, trip over the anchor, fall on your face, get metal shards from them cutting the chain embedded in your face, it gets infected, and then you die. The motorcycle cover becomes your permanent resting place, and the body bag they use to carry you out.

Dunno, I like the insurance idea better.
