Most mass shooters aren’t mentally ill.

Assholes among us.

No Silver Bullet for the problem of mass shootings.... Ba Dum Bump....

One thing that makes sense to me is to give perpetrators no air time on TV or radio. I think part of the revenge fantasy is being famous for two and a half minutes.

Am I wrong that the DSM V for people often called Sociopaths is Antisocial Personality Disorder?

The title wrongly implies these people aren't mentally ill. A more accurate title would be untreatably mentally ill.

“I think it’s the human inclination to explain behavior that is frightening and tragic as the result of mental illness because it’s very hard to understand that individuals do not have to be mentally ill to do something frightening and tragic,” said J. Reid Meloy, a forensic psychiatry professor at the University of California at San Diego who studies mass killings and consults with the FBI."

yeah i'm pretty sure there are many people with sociopathic tendencies, we all see them every day walking among us but most do not lose it all in a murderous tantrum of senseless violence because they can get by on feeding those narcissistic tendencies more cleverly, where the malevolent acts of fucking with other people are not so severe. My guess is 10% of human beings could easily be classified as sociopaths.

bullshit article that is parsing words and splitting hairs. just because the current mental healthcare system does not classify sociopathic personality disorder as a serious mental illness does not mean it is not a mental illness, and a dangerous one at that. they've taken a pyramid of illnesses and carved off the top as what they deem absolutely necessary to treat (mostly those who are a danger to themselves, and utterly unable to function independently) - leaving the rest of us to deal with the much larger base. who are basically wild animals, and very capable to blend into society and to do a shit ton of damage as a result of not being identified as needing treatment, and therefore not receiving adequate treatment. spinning everyone up that this is a gun issue is just adding more bullshit on top of the already significant pile of bullshit. :2cents

I see these people road raging on the freeway every day. Just have to steer clear.

^^^ totally and that is just one level of truth out there. there are a lot of fucked up unbalanced individuals, in fact there are "more on the outside than on the inside." the shit some people would get away with if they could....

edit: my up arrows are in reference to wazz

So much THIS! Often suicides are not reported because it is well understood that media coverage encourages others. Well guess what? Many of these mass shooters are suicidal! They intend to die. Often they turn the gun on themselves as soon as the cops show up. It has been widely reported that many, if not most, of the mass shooters are on anti-depressants. That sure sounds like mental illness to me.

there are a handful of people that i would feel nothing for after having removed them from our plane of existence. i haven't done so, yet, so nothing to see here, move along.

I don't think it's just about semantics... the main point that I got from that was
They plot methodically. They know what they are doing.

“Consequently, they often have not had significant interaction with either the mental health or law enforcement community,” the Congressional Research Service said in a long report on mass shootings that raised questions about the connection to mental illness.
And you point to that issue as well (bolded).

Leaving aside whether sociopathy is treatable or not, if they are not identifiable as mentally ill (or whatever you want to call it; if they cannot be identified as sociopaths, period) then pouring more into mental health is not going to help in those cases.

Something is missing here.

Someone. ..........

Maybe we should go check on him......

I fully expected it to already be here by page 2.....

"You Americans and your guns........."

It's a stupid splitting of hairs. Personality disorders are still mental illness. They are indeed difficult to treat. They require intensive therapy. Most clinicians are even reluctant to diagnose someone with a personality disorder. They'll describe all the traits and say it's x"xxxx-like behavior" but then they just write "deferred" in the line for axis II diagnosis.

The thing about personality disorders is that they're hard to spot. You can pick out a schizophrenic in a crowd, he might be the one arguing with a tree. Antisocial sociopaths very much live in their own miserable world, they just don't really exhibit any outward signs of their illness.

It's a no fuckin brainer that more killers would be sociopaths rather than psychopaths. An utter lack of empathy and total disregard for others, paired with an otherwise clear head, makes someone truly fuckin dangerous. Someone in a psychotic state is typically more vulnerable than dangerous.

It puts everyone in a tricky spot, though. Look up the traits for narcissistic personality disorder. If that were considered an interventionable mental illness, there'd be no one left to run any major corporations or government, and we'd be without any mainstream entertainment....actually, I might just have something, here...
