Moto trailer build

Right now I'm split between renting a small enclosed cargo trailer once or twice a year or buying something I could live out of if I chose to. If I did that I'd model the interior off of the Airstream PanAmerica pix I've seen.

They built it with a garage on the back!

(and the cabin looks pretty good too)

Any chance I could get better pics of that upper cabinet you built? Curious how it looks inside, trying to figure out what I want to do with mine.

I used aluminum angle from Home Depot and made a frame that I could screw into the steel trailer framing. Here are some pictures.

Ceiling and bed are finished. Poor planning leaves me waiting for three crimp connectors to get the juice flowing.

I do have one tip for you; ditch that wheel chock and install Pit Bull Trailer Restraint(s). They are expensive but 100% worth it.

You are 100% right on the Pit-Bull trailer restraints! Pretty nice not having the wheel chock and straps to deal with. Thanks!

Looks great. I've maxed out my abilities adding a cabinet/work bench and electrical wiring/lights :laughing

Very nice indeed. If you have the time could you post up a pic with the bike on board?

Here you go.

I wired up the tire pressure monitor system today. Went with a brand called "Tire Minder" based on reviews and the fact it has a booster to give a clear signal up to the cab of my truck. The TPMS is for trailers under 25' and for a single axle, which saved some money since most come with 4-6 tire sensors. Mine can be expanded to 4 which more than covers the bases for my needs. My truck has a TPMS stock from GMC. Also some close ups of the Pit-Bull leathers hanger and shop towel rack because they are awesome. As you can see it is a little tight with the bed down but I recently picked up a super comfy Thermarest Mondo-King mattress and don't mind being snuggled up to my bike at night.

Thank you! Any pics to share? How did your build turn out?

Here you go.
Thanks, those are great.
So the Pit Bull Restraints are on the back wheel? I've never seen them 'deployed' IRL.
Another question - I'd be interested to know (after you've used it for a while) if you ever have any issues with any vapors from the bike in a closed space overnight.

I bet you don't. :teeth

Yes, the bike is held solely by the Pit-Bull TRS. Obviously the Hypermotard has a hollow axle, so the TRS pins slide into the open ends of the axle. Pit-Bull make cups that go over the axle nuts on solid axles that work pretty much the same way. One side stays in the TRS frame all the time, the other comes out with a retaining pin to get the TRS around the wheel, then slides in to secure the frame to the bike. The TRS has a bungee cord attached so once it is on the bike you hook the bungee to the subframe (or wherever you can find) to keep it off the ground while you push/ride the bike into the trailer. I've only loaded the bike a couple times to test everything out and it is already getting easier and faster. Certainly a well thought out system. The large latches that attach to the floor plate grab the TRS frame and lock down with retaining clips. Nothing else is needed to secure the bike.

Thank you to "thedub" for the recommendation!

Another question - I'd be interested to know (after you've used it for a while) if you ever have any issues with any vapors from the bike in a closed space overnight.

I have slept in the trailer with the bike more than a couple dozen times. The first few times with my previous bike (KTM 690 Duke) and the last several times with my Ducati. Both of those bikes were/are very well sorted and don't weep any fluids or smell like gas. A Ducati that doesn't smell like gas all the time?!? Yep. Usually after a ride I leave the bike outside while I am gearing down until it cools off, which is the best case scenario, although I have wheeled it in right away and it is fine. Obviously when the bike is warm from just being ridden there is a little more "motor smell" but the cross venting in the trailer is pretty good. My trailer now has a roof vent with a fan so exhausting air should not be an issue. A friend had an old Monster 900 that seemed to burn gas just sitting in the garage. That bike (and a lot of 2-smoker dirt bikes) might not be so nice to cuddle up with. My 4-stroke KTM 250 XC-F is absolutely fine. I suppose it really depends on your bike.

Eventually I will add a side awning to the trailer so I have an outside, covered "garage" to keep the bike overnight if I wanted. I also have a cover I could use to keep the bike outside if needed, but one of the great things about this setup is the stealthiness and not drawing attention with a carbon fiber bedazzled Italian Supermodel parked outside. Great for pulling in to some random parking lot to grab a nap.

Thanks for that. :thumbup

I've been thinking about how to build out and what would I really need. I thought something a bit bigger because I would spend a lot of time (or even full time) in it. I've been planning it with a 'garage' section partly because of the stealth factor but also because of 'clean air' issues. I didn't know that such close quarters with a ready-to-ride bike could be that clean. Good to know.
