So I was on a HDforum and happen to stroll upon this.

http://www.seedealercost.com/

Basically it gives all the invoice prices for most motorcylce brands. Can anyone here chime in and see if this is really legit? Meaning that are these prices listed are really the dealers pay for as in invoice pricing?

If you browse through some of the models you can see that invoice price and msrp isnt to far off from each other. Except for Harleys

You can just ask a dealer for the invoice cost. I thought they were required to show you? Read that somewhere around here.

mmmm i dont think they're required. they can show u during negotiations tho. most likely just the factory invoice and not what the dealers paid or benefit from (ie: incentives).

I looked at the list and it looks legit. Dealers do not make very much money on selling motorcycles, so I've always heard.

They don't have a complete list of motorcycles.

Just glanced at a few things, but what's a Honda Sabre Cruiser? Not sold in the US for many years AFAIK.

And sub-10% margins are not correct, unless things have radically changed in the past 5 years.

No dealers except H-D, Vespa and Ducati make much money on bike sales normally (in terms of 12 months bike sales costs vs 12 months bike sales profits). They hope to pay the bills with parts and service.

plus they dont have accurate and up to date info. the aprilias listed are all 2012 and yes the prices have gone up on a few models.

I know for fact that Triumph margins are very slim indeed. Very. Slim.

Most moto shops make all their real money from the service and parts & accessories departments. If they happen to actually make a profit on the sales of new motos, it might (with a capital M) pay some portion of the cost of the light and gas bill. Used bikes can pay most of the monthly rent during the summer, the rest of the year - they're space suckers.

Selling motorcycles is the tool to push business into the two profitable departments. Add-on warranty sales and any other F&I trickery is pure profit for the house.

In today's economy owners of moto dealerships aren't in it to become wealthy. They started wealthy (maybe) and are like yacht owners - pouring money into a hole in the water just to try to stay afloat. Kind of like guys or gals who go racing. "How do you make a million bucks racing a car? Start with 2 million."
