The non-bolded part of your post is not entirely correct. For example a human baby/toddler does not know *not to eat yellow syrupy fluid*--it will eat it as long as it tastes sweet (aspartame, or HFC.) The human does depend on others and environment to tell them what's up.
The bold part of your post--again, people innocently believe private companies would not harm them.. Others believe too much in the FDA..
Could be. I don't find anything the color of anti-freeze appetizing. Mayhaps my parents taught me that though. Which still means it is probably one of our oldest bits of culture (culture being something that is passed down from generation to generation). So we learned it long ago and have been telling our children not to do it for millennia. Some people forget and some forget when confronted by the allure of cheap energy.
