Mouth pieces?

Robert! You see me wearing one every race weekend! Do you think I wear it because the color matches the Pirelli stickers!

For those of you on the fence, here is why I wear a mouthpiece:

My dentist suggested I wear one due to the fact that it
a: saves your teeth
b:saves your tongue
c: most importantly, the mouthpiece acts as a shock absorber upon impact and helps to reduce the severity of concusions and other trauma.

Many top professional racers wear them including Hayden, Hopkins, etc. A properly fitted mouthpiece/mouthguard will not become dislodged and cause a choking hazard. In fact, I sometimes have to use two hands to get mine off (upper teeth only) Mine was molded by my dentist. It is a very high end one, and it was NOT CHEAP (about the cost of a set of tires), but I like my smile...and my brain.

The MAIN reason a mothpiece would be good to wear. Even with the best helmet, a mouth piece even more reduces the risk of a concussion or serious brain trauma. But of course, there are THOSE incidents, where nothing would matter.

I am trying to get used to one... but I have a crappy one, and can't afford one from my dentist at this time...

Yep, a HIGH QUALITY CUSTOM mouth guard is a good idea. If nothing else it apparently significantly cuts down the severity of concussions.

Don't use one of those cheap boil-and-bite things that they use in American fooball. To do it right you're going to need to visit your dentist to have a full mold of your upper teeth made and sent off to one of the high end manufacturers.

I use one that was originally made for me when I played rugby and I can tell you that with a full cover custom mold mouth guard the risk of choking must be extremely low. That thing isn't coming out until you really want it to.

I had a nasty crash racing at Buttonwillow a couple years ago in which the chin-guard of my helmet made contact with a tire (mine or one from the other bike I tangled with). Left a huge black rubber skid mark on it.

End result: Knocked completely out with a Grade 3 concussion, inside of my mouth torn to shreds (no broken teeth, though) and a very sore jaw.

I think if I'd had a mouthpiece, it might've minimized the damage. I've bought a mouthpice since but never used it 'cause it's just to bulky. I've seen pieces that others use that are very small. I'd get me one if I could just remember what brand it was.

:laughing When this thread first showed up, I though it was someone looking for a lawyer...

LOL... At first glance I misread that and thought you said you were "trying to get a used one".

Well that'd be kinda yucky for sure. ;)

Larry Hanlon. Loudon NH. Circa 1997 (?). Veteran. Pit Bull. Used to race with a rock in his mouth, to keep from getting cotton-mouth. Motor locked up going over the hill out of turn 4. Crashed, laying in the center of the track, he sat up - got hit, then lay unconscious for a bit. Paramedics can't figure out why he won't come-to, and why he's also blue. Finally they find the rock.

He still makes the races these days, only he does so in a wheel chair. Waves a flag in turn eleven. The best you can do these days is to imagine he remembers you.

I don't know about any of you, but that scares the hell out of me. In a bind I'd choose oxygen.
