Hey, does anyone know if there is a time limit from the time you pass the MSF course until the time you can pass out of the riding portion of the test at DMV? I have a friend who took the course several years ago but never went to the DMV to get her M1. She's interested now.

there isnt a expration date on my card.. if u paid n passed the course then it should be good forever

Don't you need a permit, which expires in 6 mo, to take MSF and to apply for a M1?

My friend brought in her MSF card from 5 years previous. No problem. She took the written and walked out with her M1.

You didn't get your M1 after completing the MSF?
Under 18?

You need more than just the card - the card is not an official document.

Have your friend call the location she took the course at and ask for a copy of her DL-389 form.

FWIW, if she took the course in California before 1/04 (IIRC), it wasn't the MSF course (it should still be valid, though). If she took it in another state, she's going to need to verify with the DMV whether it's recognized in California or not.

-Q!

Let's clear up a few misconceptions here.

#1- All you need to attend an MSF course is a (car) Drivers Licence or a (car) Permit. A Motorcycle Permit is NOT required.

#2- The MSF 'card' will not get you anywhere with the CA DMV. You need a (dmv form) DL389 to have the skills test waived.

#3- DL389's do not expire. If someone looses theirs, they must submit a written request for a replacement. This request must be sent to the organization that issued it. That organization is NOT the MSF. It is the privately owned business that conducted the course. If they are out of business, or do not have a record of the requestors attendance...then they are S.O.L.

The CA DMV doesn't 'recognize' completion paperwork from outside the state of CA. You NEED a DL389 and you cannot get one without completing an approved CA course.

cool - thanks - I'll have her dig up her DL389. She's hella cool. you guys would like her here. I'll have to hook her up. She's single. And hot.

'cept for those guys on craigslist whose girlfriend's uncle's manager's drug dealer's cousin works at one of the msf course companies, and offers to give it to you for $200 :laughing
they pop up every month or so...

Hope she finds her DL 389. Or gets one reissued. You can tell her that it's little and pink and not quite squarish. On it are the words, DMV - Certificate of Completion of Motorcycle Training.

But she does have to pass the motorcycle and car written tests. If she needs a study guide, I created a 70-question RTF of actual DMV motorcycle questions and would be happy to share it.

share it!!

share it with all of us it would be helpful!! TIA!!

Oh, I'd love to have that! If you want, you can send me an email with it - smallfry.sf (at) gmail (dot) com

Gadzooks!

You need to the take written test?!?

:laughing

OK. Two RTFs will soon be on their way (don't have MS Word on my Mac). If you can't open them, PM back and I'll send them as messages. One just has questions, the other has questions with the answers X'ed -- just like you'd expect in the test.

No, no no. I'd just be nice to have a copy. I passed the test several years ago.

i didnt past the test yet taking the msf course next thursday and planning to go take the permit test on friday. my email is s2k511@hotmail.com if you want to send it to me. TIA!
