My 2026 Montana BDR Ride Report

Glad you noticed that key fob!! And happy to hear the medical issue has been sorted and prognosis is good. Thanks for bringing us along :ride :thumbup

Days 7 and 8:

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed about having to pull off the route early--we'd come all this way! But I was needed at home. The silver lining is the route home from Missoula didn't suck. At all! Lolo Pass--99 curvy miles of Hwy 12 following the Lochsa River into Kooskia, Idaho is a bucket list ride. This was my third time and it doesn't get old. From Kooskia, we rode Hwy 13 into Grangeville, then followed Hwy 95 all the way into Ontario, OR with a brief detour to Whitebird Pass, a little bypass right off Hwy 95 full of fun switchbacks before reconnecting with the main highway a few miles later.

It was getting warmer, the further south we went and we slogged through a pretty hot afternoon through Burns, OR before ending the day in Lakeview with a steak dinner and a local motel.

Sunday, we got a pre-dawn start down 395 and passed through Lassen en route to Chico for brunch.

20260712_082649.jpg From Chico, we followed Hwy 45 and a number of smaller backroads into Colusa and eventually Rio Vista, avoiding I-5 and I-80, while still getting home mid-day. So there it is...we left the rest of Section 5 through 8 on the table for a future trip, I guess. In 2024, we left the northern sections of the Idaho BDR, above Avery, on the table as well. I guess we could string the two together one of these and finish off both routes. Either way, I got to spend a week out on the bike riding amazing backroads and seeing amazing country, so it's a net win in my book. Thanks for following along!

Funny store about that pic...I have one of those little tripods with the bendy legs and a quadlock attachment so I can attach my phone and set the camera timer. My intent was to do that for this pic and get both of us with our bikes and that butte in the background. But then I saw lightning bolts coming out of those clouds. We're at 9,500' here and it's totally exposed. The hasty selfie had to make-do so we could get out of dodge.

Excellent complete write up!!! Thank you so much. I plan to ride this BDR next year.

I know full well about those stinking key fobs. My buddy lost his and a replacement was almost $600. Then a few weeks later i got the notification "key fob not in range" a block from my house. I messed up and left it in my MoskoMoto pannier rack and that too was gone! Took off and retraced my route of 50ish miles (Cloverdale - 128 - 253 - 101N to North Ukiah) with no luck. Stress took over and I rode the Benelli TNT135 the next day ultra slow, stopping here and there. After riding 128-253 to 101, searching the right side of the road, and almost giving up I turned around. I found the bag at Fish Rock Rd which was a huge relief. Shockingly the key fob and it's Hi-Viz lanyard were about 10' further away!!!!!! Not sure how, what, when, or where but I'll accept it and be thankful!!!!

Back to your regularly schedule program!

those fobs come with a plastic spare that fits in a wallet...good place!
