My OG mend has started.

Figured this is a good spot to share a little about my journey back to riding. Goal is to be on a bike in 4 months and be fully back to uninjured old man status in a year.

Just left Stanford

Arrived at the Vi
The transport dudes said this is the place Hollywood types send their parents and it used to be a Hilton. Old school Fancy fore sure.

Once in bed they had lunch delivered within minutes. Actually to fancy for me but the Mrs is looking forward to the leftovers. :laughing

All my staff are popping by to introduce themselves and each will do a more detailed visit over the afternoon.

Figure I will be here for a week or so. Proper looking spot for a lucky karma kind of guy.

The actual PT is the one thing I am nervous about.
No pain meds for the road or any this AM so feeling the pain for sure. 7 of 10. :(

The food looks edible. So that's good.

Last time I was medically transported was on May 20,.2005 at 850 AM
The other guy ..

@budman just be very cautious when/if you start doing squats (especially with weights). I was making fantastic progress in my recovery until I tore my achilles on the opposite (left) side... that absolutely derailed everything. :thumbdown

Yes sir. I am just doing light dead lifts at this point.

Not sure if I will really ever do formal squats again. :dunno

I do get jelly of those beefcakes who are squatting 350 plus pounds. Ha!

Been working on balance for a while. Now I am doing more complicated walking, stepping, sliding stuff. I can actually skip. Show the kid I could skip and she was 'OMG your healed!'

Not yet.. just another step.

A lot of weird looking stuff in the gym yesterday.
Skipping, cross walking, walking the line (like a Police drunk test), 5 sec stride balance deal (step to one leg - balance 5 secs and then back to the other balance 5 secs). Engaging the fast twitch muscles. This seems simple, but it is a big deal towards recovery and also dealing with age as I do not want to fall down.

Another week or two of this stuff and I am going to give a Zumba class a go.
I do like hanging out with the ladies so it makes sense to join 40 of them and the two dudes in the class that need to learn how it is done. :x

:laughing

10 months coming. Here is an update.

No Zumba. :laughing
Like everything I over estimate how fast I progress.
That is OK. Shows I want it and think I can do it.
I will.

Improved for sure. Slowly surely. Strength is good.
Flexibility is a bit better - boo. I am trying. Doing my nightly stretch thing now. Getting there on the cross leg stretch. Every night. Jeez.

When I can cross my leg while sitting and put on a sock it will be a big moment

Balance is much better - yeah!!

Did some at the gym today and some before I stretched tonight. Be an ninja by 70. :teeth
All good.

Doing the shoulder a bit later will suck. :(

Last weekend I rode 764 miles over 4 days in a row. Almost like a normal guy. 3rd rally weekend.
Steady progress noted at each in Terms of riding and getting around when not. First time I did not take Saturday off to rest. Leg was pretty much pain free. Shoulder not quite the same but not terrible.
Very tolerable.

When doing slow maneuvers I am being so careful to maintain control and balance to never have to plant Prince (rally deal for leg) and have to depend on it to hold up 545lbs. So far so good.

I am digging riding. Man does it feel good.

I am still in PT. Doing the new things. Getting pretty confident with my cross stepping. I still feel it though. Every step it is noted that the strength I had is not back and Prince is weaker than the left leg and this very slight pain is noted with every step.

Doing good. Going to get there.
You know ~ The cross leg sock thing.

:teeth

You’re doing better than I am. I still have to reach down and pull my legs up into a cross leg position to pull my booties on. That will never get better.

Hit eleven months on Friday (11 + 2 days by date). Bottom line is I am still mending. I am still working on it and still want to get to a better place.

The Mrs. is impressed with the commitment I have made to get the leg better and also the shoulder, which is the body part that gives me the most pain for sure.

Another longish moto ride in a few weeks as I close in on the one year anniversary of one of the worst days of my life.

I expected to be better than I am but after getting the realistic expectations firmly slapped in my face I am about as good as I can be.

I don’t know whether this is useful at all as a reframing, but I’ve consciously avoided measuring my capability in terms of metrics like range of motion or even how much weight I can move, but more in terms of whether I can do the things I want to do. Even so, I recognize that looking at the world in that way will also lead to disappointment, just a bit later than it might otherwise.

I can’t (or at least don’t want to) run around on a tennis court the way I used to. I don’t really care about that though. I do care about being able to climb things, ride motorcycles, ski and play the guitar. I can do these things, some of them with compensations, but all to a level that makes them enjoyable and where there is a possibility of getting better at them in some way. I do tend to lose interest when I reach a point where I’ll never be able to get better at a thing.

That is admittedly temporary solace. We will all reach a point where we aren’t getting better at anything. You’re a long way off from that, however and in the meantime, play the hand you’re dealt as well as you can.

A neighbor of mine in the mountains was walking with a very pronounced limp a few years ago. The guy is extremely active and an absolute mountain goat. I asked him what was going on and he replied that his ankle was now bone on bone. I expressed condolences and he shrugged and said, “Play hard, shit wears out.”

A lot of us can relate to that; I think you included.

Breaking pieces of your body changes the geometry of your structure. Things shift and even following a successful recovery the mechanics of movement are affected.
It isn’t a matter of Prince itself healing but the surrounding tissues and nerves getting on board with the rebuilt structure.

I'd work on a better story than "I fell down the stairs", unless you add something about being chased by home invading creatures. An easier story will be crafted with a motorcycle incident of course- those details could be endless. Were you even in the US when it happened?

Level 280 litch bear jumped out and hit you with spell of WTF off into a canyon?
err ... maybe enchanted slipdust pile or summat

So, you're saying: Prince AND the new power generation? :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

I have days when the artificial hip feels great, better than the real one and then I have days where I wonder if I fucked it up some how.
I admire you @budman for your perseverance.
