NASCAR Driver Tony Stewart Runs Over a Guy

Would this be a non issue if someone besides Stewart had hit him?

I mean are we just ignoring the fact that this kid was running up and down a live track on foot trying to point a finger!?

The minute you get out of your car on a hot race track and run towards the racing line, all responsibility for your safety is on you. Dude died of a bad temper. Stewart should have been in his car yesterday.

No. It's just more ironic now.

Report that's out here is Stewart's team changed out his rear tire when he came back into the pits.

Yeah I saw that on a lot of the coverage of the incident. I don't know shit about sprint car racing but for what they were saying, the right-rear tire is noticeable larger than the left and that Stewart's team didn't have another right-rear to put on so they stuck a left-rear tire on the right side. :dunno

less of an issue

I think it's because it's Stewart and the history that Stewart has
I think it's because the driver that ran over the Ward, was the same driver that put Ward into the wall - just so happened to be that it was Stewart.

Could someone please finish the thought on the tire change issue? For those of us that are too stupid to get the correlation...

Remember BARFers, when you get stuck in a bad situation, this is a jury of your peers.

Slow motion clearly shows his car drifting up the track with the back end sliding up. Combine that with the audio (on other videos) and it is a throttle induced slide. The other cars drove by with no problem, why did he gas it and get it sliding as he approached? Not to hit him intentionally, I don't think anyone believes that. But to spray him due to his hot headed, temperamental ways?

Most other drivers were on a different line. It might have been the Stewart saw Ward and reacted - thinking Ward would come lower and trying to get under him. It might have been to roost him - only Stewart knows that

and yes, Stewarts car tracks differently then the others, I assume it to be he applied throttle input and the rest did not

I grew up around dirt-track racing, both B cars and Sprint cars. My dad raced. It is not uncommon for people to be on the track when a yellow is flown. I'm not saying it's smart, but it's not uncommon enough that it would be totally unexpected. Usually when the yellows fly, folks will dart from the stands in to the middle of the oval to start prepping for the next race or to return with concessions or whatever.

It's also not uncommon for Sprint cars to go ass-over-teakettle when hit and do some serious flipping, with wings and sometimes body panels flying everywhere. Drivers pretty much expect that and know to keep a watch out. And yes, they can turn without sliding the rear at yellow-flag speeds. You just putt on around until the flagman tells you it's ok to punch it again.

My interpretation is that he gave that little blip as a fuck-you and it went very, very wrong.

all this - and I worked WOOSprint for a few years.

FYI - and Stewart would have known and understood all this so it doesn't absolve him - I'm just just providing commentary
These cars behave a little differently than you would expect and drive as such... they have a 25sq/ft wing on them, they don't have a transmission, and they use a torque tube amongst many other reasons.

My guessing would be to cover up any kind of contact marks. People do stupid shit when they are put in positions they have never been in. Certainly changing your tire from one side to the other after you just killed a man isn't going to make your accident look so accidental.

Racetracks can be dangerous while your inside a race car, imagine getting out while cars are still in motion and walking towards a certain car and then that car hits you.

RIP dead guy, it was sadly an accident that you perpetuated.

well i consioder this a tragic event Racing anything is dangerous but walking out onto the race track even under a flag is just not good thinking i can understand the drivers anger but thats racing shit happens especially on a dirt track. wether mr stewart is guilty of anything will be played out for months and i have no input on that but if that driver had stayed in his car he would still be with us! And unless mr stewart is some kind of a monster this will be with him for the rest of his days! Anyone who has taken a life always carries some guilt with them it doesnt go away!

I race dirt modifieds on the same tracks, but have been involved with sprint cars for over 30 years. The majority of teams will change the RR tire (typically installing a LR) after an event to make the car easier to trailer. It makes it lower, narrower, and easier to push because it removes the stagger. The growing tire change "conspiracy" is a complete non-issue in my mind.

That makes sense, unless you're involved in injuring someone. Does the racing org. Not care to investigate for a potential mechanical failure ?
