My car has an aftermarket navigation system and I'm getting DVD read errors. I ejected the disc and discovered it was a home burn with sharpie labeling. The car is a 2006 so something around that era...

I created an ISO on my PC and it's a bit over 8 GB. How can I burn a new DVD? I don't think it's a double layer DVD but not sure. I would not expect my DVD burner nor the Nav unit to support that format.

Or otherwise, how can I create a new DVD? I should probably get an updated map anyway.

Or maybe I should just get a new nav unit. I'm unfamiliar with what's out there though.

Turns out my unit is an Eclipse AVN5435 and uses disc mdv-09D. I'm not finding it or a download.

It's double layer and my Blu-ray burner supports DVD+R double layer.

The disc looks fine so it may be the head unit. It's been in some pretty hot weather, 118F. Maybe I'll spring for a DL DVD+R and give it a whirl.

Oh, but I read that the unit can lock if it detects a copy and then you'd need the factory disc to unlock it.

Just get the Android / Carplay unit it will work with your phone and not have to bother with the DVD stuff anymore.

Call me old fashioned, but I use a Garmin GPS for all of my navigation. I've had a Zumo 550 since 2010 that works for me off road and can be used with gloved hands. It's old, but I know how it works and it does just about everything that I need it to. I also picked up a Zumo 660 from someone here on BARF that I use on the highway if there will be no off road driving. It's better for things like freeway splits and stuff, but doesn't meet my needs off road. I'm often out of range of any cell signal, so I need something that is 100% self contained.

I don't want to be married to a phone. IS that what the Android Auto means, you have to use your phone tech to get the map navigation?

Correct but it works with any Android phone it's just how it connects to the car display. basically your phone nav takes over the display.

Do you really want to continue using a 29 year old map? Maybe this is the Universe telling you it’s time for an upgrade.

You likely already have a cell phone so no need to spend hundreds on a GPS, just use what you already have.

I suspect the nav system was installed after the car was purchased (2006), and has likely been updated since it's a home brew copy, so maybe it's only 18 years old:laughing

But honestly I thought I could get an updated DVD, or then just buy a new nav system.

I could ignore it but the damn thing keeps switching screens to the DVD message and the map, so it's annoying, and you can't just turn the thing off.

Fine here:

EDIT: Here is your most likely problem. GL

So yea old tech used to work for a long time and now doesnt.....

This car did not come from Toyota with a Nav system, so an aftermarket Fujitsu Eclipse system replaced the stock stereo.

It totally sucks how we let industry shit on consumers.

just don't use paper maps if you have a sunroof. When we were kids going somewhere with the parents on a school filed trip one of my friends was navigator. We had the sunroof open and when he went to hold the map up to read something at the bottom swoosh right out the sun roof it was hilarious to us in the backseat, dad was not so happy and we winged it from there. But honestly just upgrade to a new radio with bluetooth and some form of phone carplay and then you will never have to worry about out of date map DVDs again.
