NC35 (re)build thread - tis the season for 400cc greybikes

Bad ass. Nice work. Congrats. Bring it to WSB at Seca?

i think numest meant January of 2015

:teeth

Probably, my travel schedule means not much NC23 work is happening between now and mid October. At this point the work left for stage 1 (Running) is mostly reassembly and some inevitable dicking with things.

I should have picked a hobby that I could bring with me in my carry-on luggage.

i hate it when life gets in the way of grey market motorcycle projects :laughing

Don't listen to him. Since I bought the '35, I've travelled to Turkey, travelled to the Balkans, started a new job, moved house, and still found time to be #1 the most awesome.

So in 2014, vote #1 thenewwazoo.

Can I have some of what you're ingesting/smoking? :p

Goddamnit, why is nothing with this bike ever simple.

MotorToad and I balanced the carbs on the bike about a month ago and it ran nicely. Idled strongly, we got the carbs balanced acceptably. Put it away, come back three weeks later, and the bike would start on choke, run for about 5 seconds, and die. Starts, runs, dies. Repeat. Won't take throttle. Won't start or run off choke. What the fuck. Fuck it, I'll install turn signals and make it run later.

So today, I pull the carbs. Shorten the fuel hose in case it's kinking, lengthen the petcock vacuum hose in case it's getting pinched, make sure the slides are free. Put the tank back on, and the bike catches a little bit, and then floods.

Fine.

Pull the spark plugs, yep they're wet, clean them up, turn the petcock on, get distracted for a couple of minutes, hit the starter, engine chugs, goes clack, and then I see that the carb overflow is pissing fuel into the floor.

FUCK.

Fucking hydrolocked. Goddamnit. Goddamnit. Pull the carbs, pull all the plugs, turn the engine over with the starter and the #4 cylinder sprays fuel all over the top radiator. Well, at least now I'm huffing enough gas fumes that I'm nice and high. Pull the carb bowls, nothing looks obviously wrong, put them back on the bike, and change the oil. Smelly. Hook up a fuel bottle and the bike starts and runs on choke, won't run without choke, takes throttle okay but kinda-sorta sounds like it has an intake leak.

Fuck it. Let's go learn how to MIG weld.

^^^^^^ what!? the grey market bike is giving you engine trouble! i'm so SO surprised! :laughing

yea i always make a point to start/ride Violets CBR400rr every 2 weeks, at least. otherwise it seems to forget how to run right....... as cencalballer says, "gotta love old bikes" hahaha Best of luck with getting her to run right again; i'm sure you'll figure out what the issue is. and yeah, good call on the old fuel. the older bikes, especially the smaller CC bikes, really dont like old fuel. and really like to clog their idle jets if left sitting too long!

I learned real quick that in between races I had to run the carbs dry or she wouldn't start at the next race.

float shut off is the first thing I would look at. I dont remember the measurement but I know i have it somewhere. its way different than the NC30 so dont use that number.

There's something really nice about working with guys who are craftsmen. Sometimes you really do need to enlist the help of someone who's been there and done that.

On Wednesday, these very shiny specimens get added to one RVF400 assembly and, hopefully, magic will happen.

that reminds me.... i need to go start the CBR400RR :laughing

didnt even mean it as a gloat; more as a "awe fuck; this old school bike giving me more chores to do - even when its supposed to be DONE" kinda thing!

:laughing :cry

we are for sure gonna have us a cbr400 ride this coming spring.... i'll post it in another month or two.... give people plenty of time to get ready :ride

I'll make you a deal. You store it at Moto Shop and leave permission for me to grab the key from time to time and I'll make sure it gets started real regular-like. :D

I somehow "managed" to take it for a spin yesterday.... maaaan was it painful! :laughing

everytime I hop on this bike I am amazed how well it handles and how light it is; keep working Numist - it'll be well worth it! :loco :ride
